TLJH is a 2D point and click adventure that continues the story of April Ryan.

Preproduction will begin if their Chapters Kickstarter reaches $2M.

But I created a new thread because they have clarified this game is not a mere possibility as we thought, it WILL happen one way or another, it's just that if they reach $2M it'll happen sooner/easier.

Meaning they are officially announcing TLJH is going to be the next TLJ game, after Chapters.

Quote:
By popular demand, and in answer to questions on both Kickstarter and Twitter, here is further clarification of what reaching our $2 million TLJH stretch goal will mean.

The plan is to make The Longest Journey Home AFTER we finish Dreamfall Chapters. We're a small team, and we don't want to stretch ourselves too thinly, not while Chapters is still our number one priority.

With the $2 million, however, we can begin writing, designing and creating concepts and background art for TLJH in preparation for full production. In other words, we will be greenlighting pre-production on the 2D sequel to The Longest Journey, making sure everything is in place for when we have the capacity to move forward with the game.

The $2 million won't cover the production costs of both games, far from it, and the bulk of the money will still go to making Dreamfall Chapters as deep, rich, immersive and rewarding as possible. But pre-production work will begin on TLJH before Chapters is released -- if, that is, we reach our stretch goal.

Funding won't stop with the Kickstarter, however. All the PayPal pledges will count towards the total. That also goes for any new PayPal pledges we might be accepting after the Kickstarter ends. We haven't yet made any decisions regarding this, but we may introduce ways to upgrade pledges and for new pledgers to become 'slacker backers' after March 10th -- when we know more, we'll let you all know.

What this means is that even if we do NOT get to $2 million on Kickstarter, the race is far from over, and hope is certainly not dead! We have a good while to go before Chapters is released, and we hope to keep raising money towards both the production of Chapters (improving the game every step of the way) AND towards The Longest Journey Home. And if that doesn't get us where we need to be, we will definitely look at ways to raise money for TLJH at some point in the future -- including, of course, using any profits from Chapters towards the next game.

This is a story we want to tell and, dammit, we're going to tell it. Some way, somehow, at some point.

Regarding rewards: TLJH is a stretch goal, and the $2 million will NOT cover production costs on the game. While TLJH will be cheaper to produce than Dreamfall Chapters, that money will only be able to get us so far in terms of early pre-production and design work, and we will need to raise additional funding for TLJH if and when the game enters production.

What this means is that we obviously cannot offer copies of The Longest Journey Home as rewards at this point -- not just because we'd still need more money to make it, but also because we can't guarantee anything regarding release date, platforms or availability. Again: reaching the TLJH stretch goal means that we'll begin pre-production, not that we'll finish the game any time soon. And we don't want to make any promises that we can't keep, that's very important to us.

But! Here is what we WILL do.

If we do reach $2 million, all of our Dreamfall Chapters pledgers -- both Kickstarter and PayPal -- will be inducted into some sort of The Longest Journey Home Founders Club (name may obviously change) and we will strive to find a way to reward your passion, dedication, love and support when we get closer to production (and launch) of TLJH.

This might include making TLJH a future add-on, it could mean a reduced retail price, it could mean exciting bonuses... We haven't decided yet, but we definitely will do SOMETHING, and we will ask you guys for input and advice -- if, that is, we cross $2 million.

Your good deeds will not go unrewarded. And your support for The Longest Journey Home will certainly be rewarded. You have our word for it.

Thanks again, everyone, for helping us push onwards & upwards these past few days! It's amazing to see us pushing past $1,1 million and rapidly heading towards our next stretch goal. And while $2 million is a long, long way off, there is definitely hope -- if not during the Kickstarter, then afterwards, and for the long haul. Every dollar counts, both now and in the future!

We WILL bring the journey home. We won't rest until that happens. The story WILL be told. You made Dreamfall Chapters a reality; with your help, The Longest Journey Home will become a reality as well.

Thanks, and onwards & upwards!

Brilliant from financial point of view. They get the cash from kickstarter to fund Chapters, but since backing also buys copies of the game, they introduce another independent game, that everyone will have to buy.
