WARNING: Although the PS3 doesn't have any games in the first place, you are instructed NOT to do any GAMING by Sony as a precaution.

-----------

Still haven't taken it all in but apparently there's a bit of a problem with the ol'PS3 that began yesterday night and has had consequences for the following day;

Quote:
All around the world, PlayStation 3 consoles simply aren't working like they're supposed to, with an error preventing people from not just going online, but from playing some PS3 games offline as well.

From Europe to the Americas to, well, my house in Australia, users (mostly of older "Fat" consoles, those released before 2009's "PS3 Slim") are complaining that upon booting their consoles up, they're unable to sign into their accounts, check their trophies, use dynamic themes or access the PlayStation Network. That's fine, Sony say there are PSN connection problems, and that they are "looking into it".

http://kotaku.com/5482328/ps3s-suffering-from-global-network-lockdown
http://kotaku.com/5482476/ps3-failure-you-are-not-alone

As Kotaku points out in the last link, folk on neoGAF seem to believe it's a date issue like that which affected the Zune. Can check the full, hilarious thread here for some information and advice; http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=388872

Quote:
Everyone READ THIS PLEASE.

Here's what's going on right now: something with the PS3's internal clock has borked in some pre-slim models. This is not a PSN issue; it has to do with your PS3's clock. This clock is NOT related to the OS clock. It seems to be a leap year bug. Setting your clock ahead will do nothing. All PS3s around the world were affected at the exact same time.

Does this affect me?

-If you have a Slim PS3, you're good to go. Continue playing it as normal.
-If you have a "fat" PS3, you may be affected. Some fat PS3s have worked ok, but it seems a good majority have been bugged.

What does this bug mean?

-If affected, your date and time has been set to a random past date. This prevents you from signing into PSN, playing any PSN games, or using any DLC. Your trophies will also not display correctly or be able to sync.

How do I fix it?

-You can't. Even if you don't sign into PSN, it won't help. This is a hardware issue.

So, what do I do?

-Wait 24 hours. Other products that have had similar bugs have corrected themselves after the "bugged" day. On Monday around 6pm central time, all PS3s will automatically correct themselves...maybe.

-If that doesn't work, we'll need a firmware update from Sony, which should be a pretty important priority for them right now.

Did I lose my data/themes/etc?

Your save data/games/dlc/themes are fine. They'll be fixed when the PS3 is fixed. Trophies are uncertain right now, but they'll be fine if you've synced them before the PS3 was bugged. Unsynced trophies are an unknown right now.

If I have a bugged PS3, can I still use it?

It's probably not a good idea, as I have no idea what will happen to the trophies you earn during the bugged time. Movies/media will work fine.

Quote:
The going theory is that the PS3 is storing some form of date in GMT, then modifying that to get whatever you see in the on-screen clock. That modification process seems to be fine--the system can take 2/28/2010, 9PM GMT, add four hours, and get 3/1/2010, 1AM random time zone.

What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and shit explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so.

And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)

Oops Embarassed

Upto 5 million affected, reformatting harddrive wont help according to sony rep, everything is corrupt on mine. Rep said he was unsure if consoles not under warranty will be replaced free of charge. Probably spent 20 on the bloody phone call to them i was in a queue so long. Complete cluster f**k or what

I'm sure Sony would sort something out that was fair and the guy above must have spoke to someone who didn't really have a clue what was going on but still, this is one big fuck up.

I was thinking the same thing, actually... I reckon Sony did this on purpose. No, no.. hear me out; What are the only models unaffected? the Slimlines right? What are the only models currently being closest to hacked? Original Phats? Yeah, exactly. My guess is that Sony are more than willing to "fix" the issue by replacing current Phat models with Slims. Hell, they'll most likely do it for free in order to save bad press from refusing to replace machines that have died through no fault of the user.

Et voila, hacked problem gone. For now.

Of course it could all just be one hell of a coincidence, but I don't believe in coincidences.

Better than the weather from "head up the ass" land. Why don't you at least THINK about it instead of immediately jumping on the "let's hate on Sabin" bandwagon, huh?

I thought that too, Sabin. But what if they got caught out, would that not be a bit embarrassing for them? Plus they could always just offer a free or discounted upgrade program. This problem isn't effecting all of the old PS3's either.

Because obviously it's more fun than jumping on the "lets hate SONY" bandwagon.

Oh yeah... and I'm not delusional. There is no conspiracy here for god sake.

They could just downplay it by saying "it's a known hardware issue, which is why we released the Slim" just like MS constantly releases new revisions of the 360 in order to TRY (and fail >_>) to combat the overheating issue.

Umm... did I say I hate Sony? That just proves you didn't even bother reading my post, you just skimmed it and thought "Oh it's Sabin, let's have some more fun insulting him like usual"

Pffft, it's amazing how Lutzifer can dare say I don't contribute to this forum, threatening to ban me, whilst keeping people like you here. People have never contributed ANYTHING to this place.

sounds a bit extreme though, replacing every Phat with a slim as a bid to not lose money against piracy? at this stage of the ps3 dev cycle, i wouldnt agree it made sense.

No I didn't. I didn't have to just skim it through. Your post was hardly a novel. I read it, and thought that the idea was ridiculous. Which it IS!

And I never said that I hated you either BTW. Get a grip FFS.

Why not? Sega did it with the Dreamcast (almost right at the end of the console's life, they brought out a brand new one with the CD-DA exploit fixed on the internal firmware) and Microsoft/Nintendo do it all the time with their machines; new motherboard for the Wii, to try and combat the modchips, and new drives for the 360 to combat the flashing.

It's not a huge leap to think Sony with the, now-very-real, threat of piracy that they'd want to preempt it with whatever tools and/or reasons they can think of.

i wasnt clear, i agree with you that they would try to combat piracy with new models etc, but i wouldnt agree that sending out free replacement slims to all phat users is the best approach, as we would hardly be wanting to pay for it.

my machine has some dodgy date at the top, 1/1 and the time is wrong, also cant connect to Live. not tried a game... dont want anything to mess up!

I had the same date. Set to the 1st of March 2000. I just set it back in the settings but obviously my console still can't connect to the PSN. Games work fine after a quick test of a couple of titles.

EDIT: I have to add that I'm not worried about this at all. It seems like such a minor issue which I'm assuming will be resolved soon enough. The sky isn't falling people, calm down.

there's a difference between phasing out vulnerable parts and deliberatly crippling it just to force users to switch models Wink

I think it's a bit ott to think sony would replace 5 million phatt consoles just because it might be hacked in the near future!! that could be a lot of money wasted..

You mean as opposed to being completely free 100% of the time, as it is now?
