Picked up a PS3 that can't read discs for $20 last night. Old 40GB model, came with a controller, box, and all the cords!

I've been looking online and it seems like cheapest blu ray lasers are $65. I have a shop here that sells laser and or does the replacement. They charge $100 for the fix. I might just do it myself as it doesn't seem to hard, but man. $120 for a ps3 worst case scenario.

Started downloading demos last night. What would you guys recommend for free stuff off of PSN?

nice...I picked up my ps3 slim from a ebay store that sells as-is items. I won the auction for 95USD...it was not turning on, so I sent it to Sony who sent me a replacement for free.pretty amazing feeling to get a full brand new ps3 slim 120GB w/ all accessories in shrinkwrap for less than 100 bucks

It's very easy to do it yourself. Took me about 15 mnutes to replace the laser and deck in my 40 gig. That included opening and closing the case up.

Yeah i looked at a few guides, doesn't seem to bad, I've modded xboxes, 360's, did the ps2 laser fix. Just not sure it's even worth my time, but i do enjoy a good project Smile

I really can't stress it enough. It's so easy that anyone could do it. I definetely wouldn't call it a project.

Although I have to add that I didn't replace the lens on it's own so I don't know if that's mnore awkward or not. I replaced the laser and deck thats complete with motor. The entire job involves nothing more than removing screws, unclipping a couple of ribbon cables and switching them over. Put it back together and that's it.

Job done.

Yeah sounds easy enough - PS3 case easier to open than the xbox 360?

It has one tamper proof torx screw on the exterior of the case under the sticker on the left hand side of the console. At the time I didn't have tamper proof torx screwdrivers but I easily opened it using a small flathead screwdiver anyway. Inside it's all philips screws. It's much easier to open tan the 360.

This is what I ordered, not from this seller but the same item:

so, is this more or less the whole ps3 drive (including disc spin/in/out mechanism)? since it just says laser

No, it's not the whole drive. It's just the laser and the deck that it sits on including the motor and rails that it moves on. Oh and the bit that spins the disc up. This is only a small part of the interior mechanism of the drive.
