I have a PC on a network with DHCP server and internet access is blocked.

I know that by changing my MAC address I can avoid the block and have been doing so.

But now DHCP server is not using my MAC address to identify my PC and is using something else. Anyone knows how can a PC be identified other that MAC address?

I read a bit about DHCP and there is something called Client ID. It's a unique PC identifier and most of the time it is PCs MAC address, but it can be something else. Could that be my case? If so, what can Client ID be, how can I find out and change it to avoid the block?

as far as i know, the client first requests the old ip from the dhcp server and takes it if it's available before asking for a new one
beyond that i don't know
only thing sent should be the mac
ofcourse they can trace the traffic's route and block it manually from the router

Try chancing the computer network identifier from computer properties.

Can I clear the old IP manually so I may get a new IP?

How? And how can I avoid that?

I did, I get the same IP now. Before, I always got a different IP.

This is what I found about Client ID :

http://www.dhcp-handbook.com/dhcp_faq.html#wiaci
Quote:
What is a Client ID?
What is termed the Client ID for the purposes of the DHCP protocol is whatever is used by the protocol to identify the client computer. By default, DHCP implementations typically employ the client's MAC address for this purpose, but the DHCP protocol allows other options. Some DHCP implementations have a setup option to specify the client ID you want. One alternative to the MAC address is simply a character string of your choice. In any case, in order for DHCP to function, you must be certain that no other client is using the client ID you choose, and you must be sure the DHCP server will accept it.

Anyone knows how can I see my PCs Client ID and change it?

the non-mac client id's i would think would be exclusively for special case networks that want to keep it extra locked down

there's these switches for ipconfig, but i don't know if they do what you want
/registerdns Refreshes all DHCP leases and re-registers DNS names
/showclassid Displays all the dhcp class IDs allowed for adapter.
/setclassid Modifies the dhcp class id.

i don't know what kind of a network you're on, but if they have access to routers in the network between you and the internet, and they block you from the router, there's not many things you can do with that, other than physically going to the router and switching your cable to an open port and hope it's enabled

i'm not any expert on any of this though

are you stealing your neighbor's corporate cable or something? Smile
