Rather funny, but I drank a lot of whiskey tonight, might be part of explanation.

Xbox Live is suffering from an infestation of the worst kind. Children. They infect every game. Screaming into our ears. Voices so high you hope your ears burst and bleed just so it stops. They use language and say things most of us hadn’t dreamed of saying at that age. They never stop talking or screaming, and don’t say a single thing anyone actually wants to hear. Muting them only helps our ears. Their gameplay is generally so terrible, they kill teammates thinking they were the enemy. Teamwork is a concept they know nothing about. Somehow they obtain all the good weapons and quickly die, handing them over to the other team. No reasoning, conversation, or logic can be attempted with them. This my dear friends, is a problem we cannot escape, no matter how hard we try, they are always there. This is gaming on Xbox Live.
It seems more and more often parents are just turning their children loose online. They do this for many reasons, but mostly because they don’t want to deal with them. It’s easier to make everyone else listen to a loudmouth kid than dealing with them screaming. Not only do they harass everyone, but once you react it gets worse. Sometimes, in rare instances, the kids are making such a scene the parents might even jump in. These are my favorite and most sought after situations because it just proves how far degraded today’s society is. I actually had a parent rip the headset off a child’s ear, put it on, and begin to tell us how irresponsible we are because we are older than her 9 year old. She continued yelling at us about how immature we are being by telling him to stop screaming and play. Did I mention we were playing Gears of War 2? Ya, exactly.
When Xbox Live first launched, Microsoft put a notice on the box informing potential buyers that players were required to be age 13+ to play online. This has changed dramatically. In an attempt to cater to as much of the market as possible, Microsoft has directed more and more attention to “family gaming”. Most of us long-time gamers know exactly what this means: Kids. I have no problem whatsoever with children playing video games. Almost all of us started out that way! Where the problem starts is giving them a headset, and access to Live. Microsoft has done away with online age requirements, and I honestly can’t blame them. A vast amount of their console sales have been due to the “family gaming” campaign. Plus, why stop parents from spending money to buy Xbox Live Gold accounts? So, change the policy and rely on retailers and game ratings to govern the community. If a game is rated Mature it shouldn’t be in the hands of children anyways, right? Yeah, but that only works in theory. More and more parents disagree, just don’t know better, or flat-out don’t care!
EA has taken steps to resolve the issue, and I’m personally thrilled about it. They have implemented a safe guard for children accounts attempting to access their servers. Say I’m a 12 year old with my Xbox Live child account. I have Mass Effect 2 in the drive (thanks to my irresponsible parents) and I’m about to sign onto the cerberus network. A notice will pop onto the screen alerting me that “your gamer profile does not have the correct permissions to access xbox live functionality”. Cue screaming and crying to mommy. Obviously, this is the parent’s fault, but they will still blame EA, BioWare, and Microsoft. In my opinion, every company should be taking similar steps, including Microsoft. Nothing says we support parental controls to help sell consoles like ignoring serious issues including underage players online. The gaming community as a whole is fed up with it, and it appears only EA has noticed so far.
Another point I’m sure you Playstation devotees are dying to comment about is the Playstation Network. More specifically, the FREE Playstation network. We all know children cannot legally work or obtain credit cards to pay for Xbox Live. So, why has the free PSN generally dealt with few of these problems, leaving an average population of mature and aged gamers? Presently scientists and poll-takers are busy with cancer and political propaganda so no studies have been devoted to this topic, all we can do is speculate. Many factors may contribute to this phenomenon including the Xbox dropping in price well before the Playstation. The initial price of the PS3 being much higher than the 360. The incredible exclusive titles and games lineup for the 360. The market domination of Xbox consoles sold. The millions more online accounts active on Xbox Live than on PSN. The reliability and dependability of the Xbox Live service. Or the amount of features the Xbox has. Regardless of the exact reason, Xbox Live is suffering tremendous, scarring effects.
For example, MAG is one of the biggest games of right now. With 256 players in a single game, the warfare is epic. However, if you don’t have a Playstation, you don’t get to play it! It’s no secret every console has exclusives, but MAG is one of these exclusives that fits perfectly with my point. Zipper Interactive’s Ben Jones has this to say about Xbox Live. “I actually consider Xbox Live the more juvenile of the two,” blaming the things players are saying over Xbox Live for the service’s relative immaturity. “Each service has its own posse,” Jones states, “I think the PlayStation audience definitely fits more to our game. As we saw in the beta we’ve got an audience that’s willing to communicate and willing to organize and structure, and help other people to play the game. That’s the most remarkable thing that I saw in the beta – random people helping other players along to try and familiarize themselves with this really cool experience.”
The Xbox Live community has a very negative reputation due to the absence of age requirements and regulations. So far this reputation has denied us the pleasure and fulfillment of playing one of the most ambitious, talked about games of today. What’s next? Are more developers going to follow in Zipper Interactive’s footsteps? Are all future titles going to be developed with maturity and teamwork being such an important part of the experience that studios refuse to let a certain community’s reputation possibly ruin it? There is a popular saying that goes: one person can ruin everything for an entire town. This is exactly what is happening to an online service many of us love. What are we to do? Filing a complaint about a player or submitting negative feedback isn’t enough! What steps can we take to prevent the further destruction of our reputation? How can we encourage developers and publishers to take steps to prevent online access to children? So far gamers are left out in the cold to fend for ourselves. It only takes one person to start a riot. Will you find a way to redeem the masses?

No doubt about it, for some obscure reason the PSN network IS the more mature environment.
Why you ask?
I have absolutely no idea................[passes wind]

It's quite simple why, really. Price. The 360 has always been CONSIDERABLY cheaper than the PS3, so parents are more inclined to get that instead - even if you have to pay monthly for Live. The 360 is the most affordable platform for kids and parents alike.

Wow Ty, I could not agree more. Honestly I usually had a big enough party that I could stay in that and not hear any of the little kids playing. However, with MW2 not allowing parties in matchmaking games it makes you realize exactly how many 12 year olds are talking shit… toggle mute… toggle mute… toggle mute…
Mag with 256 people when 199 of them are under age = no fun. I will stick with left 4 dead and my handy mute button. I also though could not agree more Ty, in fact tonight alone I argued with about 10 little kids.
This is so true, its the most annoying thing since the RRoD. Well, i’d think i’d prefer that, than to be stuck in a game with a bunch of kids without a mute button. But luckily i tend to stick to MWII and gears so i can mute the annoying little brats.
I would love to see Microsoft do something about this, because like you said, theres nothing we can do about it. :/
This morning I was playing TDM on MW2 and this little kid was singing (very very badly!) and then I said ‘STFU’ and I muted him and then I sent another message saying ‘8 year old twat!’ and then his reply was ‘im actually 11 ty!’
When I was that age, I did cool things like actually go outside. The only games I played were nice games like Super Mario 64, and my parents actually second guessed buying me Super Smash Bros. Melee because it was rated Teen.
Kids these days seem to be getting ruder and less mature as a whole (at least where I live) and I blame their parents. Whether they be working too much or they are just too lazy, they basically plop their kids in front of what is basically a $300 baby sitter.
And I play PC, which generally has a more mature (in age anyway) population.
the reason why you don’t get screaming 8 year – old brats on PSN is because, generally speaking, screaming 8 year – old brats and their familys can’t afford a PS3.
Yes, that would be so great. I mean seriously, 3/4 of the people playing Mature rate online games are not old enough to even be playing it. It's annoying hearing those squeaky little voices accusing you of cheating. I hate it.
Anyway, I guess that it really isn't just me. 90% of the time when I play 360 online there's some 9-year old kid screaming into his mic. It's irritating! And it doesn't seem to matter which game, either; Left 4 Dead, CoD, TF2, PGR... They're everywhere. I'm getting really sick of it.
This is one of the advantages to not having a headset packaged with the console. @_@
That's complete BS. Gears has some of the worst people I've ever met on live. I've had back-to-back-to-back games filled with these stupid little annoying kids. Half the time you can't tell whether it is a guy or girl, since half of xbox live hasn't hit puberty.
And playing on PSN offers much more competitiveness than on live. Xbox live is just too easy, since kids have no tactics. They wouldn't survive a second in a game like MAG, or even Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2.... well any PSN game really...
PSN = Mature
Xbox Live = Twats

I thought playing MGS2 for the first time and discovering Snake had been replaced by a blonde fag also was great.
