|
 |
Quote: | It had to happen, as you can’t keep good hackers down, but finally someone has hacked the PS3. According to George Hotz’s blog post, Geohot has made the acquaintance of the Hypervisor, which presumably is a really good sun shield for protecting the PS3 from overheating in warmer climates.
As the blog states, it’s taken well over 3 years for the PS3 to finally be hacked. That’s pretty good going for consumer electronics these days, although George says it took him a total of 5 weeks to do the deed. There’s not a lot of information yet, as you’d expect, but you can always follow @geohot on Twitter if you want to get the latest news as he releases it.

Normally I'd brush this off as yet another rumour, but this is the same guy who unlocked iphone 3.0 and released blacksn0w/blackra1n. So it's looking hopeful!

You still have the Bluray problem though, but I guess buying a Bluray burner would still be cheaper than buying every good game.

Maybe an iso loader + usb HDD, like on the Wii ? Or some connection to a PC ...

If we can write our own shit, than iso loaders ftw...
2TB drives are not so expensive... problem is that the ps3 only has 5 games that are worth getting. So I rather buy those instead...

Geohot is a trusted guy, if he says he found all this then it's true. Every time before he found an iPhone exploit, he eventually released some kind of software to jailbreak it. Now hopefully it's easier to achieve than the JTAG exploit on 360.

So, does that mean it'll finally be worth to buy a PS3 and download/burn God of War 3?

Well, he found an exploit and can run arbitrary code, now the PS3's system must be reversed and cracked, hopefully to play blu-ray backups or run homebrew stuff off dvds or something.
Is that his real name, by the way ?!

Wrong, unhackable is possible - but there is no "unhackable" for actually useful software (yet).

Wrong, what that's proved? it's just in "theory" it didn't prove nothing, nothing as been proved as really "unhackble"

I'm looking at a stack of about 10 games that would like to have a word with you (and numerous others that I haven't had the cash to grab).

Great news indeed! Although I am instantly worried about multiplayer, mainly it's possible that I won't be able to play online if i hack. Then I'd have to buy a second PS3 for online LOLZ.

I wouldnt be too bothered about this if sony made the device fully media functional so we can play all media files. The games side doesnt really interest me too much as I only play a few games

yeah. what I want is an HD xbox media center running on either my xbox360 or ps3.
I buy games and don't have a problem with it, but the awesomeness that was my xbox1 with xbmc will never be forgotten.
Now with my HDTV I can't use the old xbox anymore.
Sure, I could buy a media center pc and use that for xbmc but I got too much shit on my tv table already and don't really feel like paying another 300 bucks or so.
I just wish sony or m$ would come up with a media player that is on par with xbmc and put that on their consoles.
The current limited format support and restrictions makes them useless for my mediaplayer purposes.
I suppose it isn't so easy for them because they'd probably need to pay a lot of people to be allowed to put all the codecs on a commercial machine like a gaming console, but it still sucks...
