I almost lost my right eye (and I got some pretty bad burns on my right forearm) when I heated a cup of water in the microwave. I took it out and it exploded straight up in a ball of burning hot steam and water. The sickest thing I've ever taken part of. It hit my hair and my right forearm. Had to wear painkilling ointment under a bandage for a week. Bought a water boiler after that. ^^

pure water => a minute in the microwave. Hot enough, if your microwave is above 800watts. Anything above a minute can be too long in my experience. And a water boiler cant beat that time.
I usually only use the water boiler for large amounts of water, but mainly because i dont have any microwave-safe stuff for larger amounts.

Microwave oven superheats water or whatever the correct term is.
As long, as the heated water is still or allowed to "cool" down a bit, it's safe. Throw something in it, and bam! It will boil for some time.
Fun actually. Dangerous? Not, if you dont heat it too long.
