How do you usually play a racing game?

I used to play the old NASCAR racing games with steering wheel + pedals and it was quite the experience mind you NASCAR is usually big ovals which doesn't require alot of turning of the wheel. The road courses were a different story constantly turning left and right ballancing a rocket on a narrow stretch of pavement, takes a lot of practice. Being consistent is the challenge. Anyway with a wheel you need a good place to mount it to your desk this may sound stupid but most of the time it's an afterthought and this can turn out to make the experience very bad if you don't have a decent place to mount it.

Now with that said, I personally prefer the XBOX 360 joystick for Windows if I am going to play a game that requires a lot of turning left/right and split second decisions.

If I was going to play NASCAR a wheel would almost be necessary, it helps with the small adjustments required while going 170+MPH.

All require fast response times and turning a huge life size wheel you would really work up a sweat pretty fast not to mention fighting the force feedback would be a pain in the ass. Like I said think about how much your actually going to be turning the wheel if it's not a lot then it might be worth it - but the 360 joystick is more than enough for me for any racing game as of yet...

I can currently move my left thumb quicker than I can move both my arms in any direction Wink

I don't know if either of you actually have a driver's license, but I find that with a wheel car control in a good racing game is much better Smile

My mate has the Logitech Momo wheel, and in Dirt 2 for example, my drifting is much smoother with his wheel. The quick turns aren't much harder to make, provided that you're used to it. Compared to a real life situation, the wheel just allows me personally to actually get my wheels ingame to go where I want them to go, where with my own gamepad (Logitech Rumblepad 2) I tend to oversteer like fuck.

I do use custom settings in games like Dirt as well though Razz

Basically, if you play a lot of racing games and actually know how to use the different settings for cars, you'll most likely do better with a wheel. On that note, Dirt for example is actually pretty good when it comes to car handling. Not the best, but not as arcade as some other racing games either. Simple things like loosening the differential make a huge difference, and if you've ever driven a modified car in real life, you'll notice that it sort of has the same effect in the game as it does in real life.

Does get more tense with the wheel though, because you're much more active :}

If you do get a wheel, download Live For Speed - free, and bloody amazing with a wheel, especially in the "normal" cars (all their cars' physics and handling are based on real life cars; they can't use real names due to licensing, but it's got stuff like a 205 GTI in there for example <3).

Dirt2 is decent, shift is decent, Grid is shit, gtr2 is great, rfactor is great, richard burns rally is great, lfs is great. the more sim the game gets the better the feel of the wheel will be.

Here's your original thread; http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53574

Still not bought one, but still interested. Bite the bullet... and get some proper sims installed.

Well I have a G25 for some years now, and it has been fantastic. The pedals won't fall apart like the MOMO, they can take prolonged abuse and the shifter (which represents the weakest link in terms of build quality) hasn't given up the ghost either.

Whether it's the best wheel or not, I don't know as I've only ever ridden with the MOMO and the G25. But you can't go wrong if you choose that.*

*unless you plan on using it on the 360, in which case your only option is the most expensive Fanatec wheel & pedals setup (not sure what the name of it is).

The Driving Force GT is supposed to be a good entry level wheel, so if you were still on the fence I'd look at that and see whether the price helps your decision. Either way, you should definitely not get one if you aren't going to play at least one of these;

- Live for Speed
- rFactor
- GTR / GTR2
- Nascar Racing 2003
- Richard Burns Rally
- iRacing
- Gran Turismo
- NetKar Pro
- (etc)

Don't buy one (exclusively) for;

- GRiD
- DiRT
- SHiFT
- Grand Theft Auto 4

Otherwise it's a waste of money - but if you're anything like me you'll want to play as many driving games as you can when you get your wheel - the question is whether or not you'll like the simulation types, which only you will know.

G27 is coming up £260 odd on my end, as opposed to the £140 for the G25. Just a quick google search mind, so you might be able to find them cheaper, but the G27 will be more expensive for sure.

yeah the g27 is quite expensive.

Its just a tweaked up g25.
The improvements are not that great for me to cough up that extra cash.

10x better, used a G25 for a couple of years and personally i cant play a driving game (on a Pc) without a wheel now, so much more better especially if you get one with the gears and pedals.
mainly play GTR2/Evo but have tried most of the other big games and all of them are much better with a wheel.
