I need some help with my Geforce card. I have an Asus GeforceFX 5950 Ultra Deluxe, and i seem to be having some problems with it. When i was playing Sid Meie'rs Pirates today (the new one that was released, not the old one from the 80's Smile ) it suddenly crashed during one of the swordfights. My whole system hanged, and i got one of those critical system error blue screens that Windows XP has, and my whole computer rebooted. After it rebooted, windows popped up a message saying that i had had a critical system error and that it was due to a graphical drawing error or some such caused by my graphics card driver. Now, i have an Asus card, but i have been using the official Nvidia drivers from www.nvidia.com, and not the ones that Asus has on their homepage. So what gives? Should i not use Nvidia's drivers, and instead only use Asus drivers since i have an Asus card? Could i have gotten that system error because the nvidia drivers aren't compatible with the graphics card?

Here's the strange thing though. I've actually had these same problems before. When i first bought the card in the beginning of the year, i got these very same system crashes no matter what game i played. I got them in ALL games. At first i thought my card was defective, so i sent it back to the place where i bought it and they tested it and said it worked fine. Then i tried a bunch of things that didn't work. Finally, i bought a new mainboard, and then suddenly everything was working fine. Before i bought the new mainboard, Splinter Cell 2 would give me the system crashed EVERY SINGLE time i tried to play, after about 10-20 minutes of playing. But as soon as i bought the new mainboard everything was fine, and i was able to play through the whole game without any crashes. I never had a single crash after that, until today. I've played farcry, HL2, doom 3 and lots of other graphics intensive games without any problems, but now when i try to play pirates it suddenly gives me the crash. So what do you think? Is my card defective, or is it because nvidia drivers aren't compatible with Asus cards?

Thanks for your help.

I don't think it's because the the nvidia drivers are not compatible with your asus card. Have you had any other problems with the card after this incident and is the crash reproductive?
Hmm, hard to tell what you can do now. I wouldn't worry if it only happens with pirates and no other d3d or opengl application. A friend of mine once had an asus geforce3 and he had the same probs you described. Every game crahsed after about 10 minutes. They gave him a new card at the store and after that everything worked fine.

Well, just to be sure i removed my Nvidia drivers yesterday and replaced them with the official Asus drivers. Now everything seems to be fine :\

I played the game all day straight yesterday with no crashes. Oh well, as long as it's working Smile
