Fuck them in the ass. Just had my first ever windows 7 bluescreen after using the OS all the way since the beta. Why did I have a bluescreen? Some ATI software shit itself. Not only that but I have to run with Aero off otherwise the display driver crashes and has to be reset twice a day. The 5870 has a lot of horse power but the software is total shit.

I haven't heard anyone with that problem yet to be honest. Blue screens are usually memory related; software only causes it if it performs some invalid operations on the memory, which is quite unlikely.

Sounds to me like your RAM is failing, run memtest yet?

The bluescreen mentioned an ati software as the fault.

That's the thing with BSOD's though, they only show where the problem originated; considering drivers always get loaded in the same order, you won't be able to tell for sure whether it's the driver or not. It might also very well be something in Windows' own files that's breaking, or like I said, the RAM.

My suggestion - Do this after tomorrow though, because ATI should be release their new driver tomorrow (Dec 16th):
1. Uninstall all ATI software
2. Install http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-(Setup)-download-1655.html
3. Reboot into safemode
4. Run Driver Sweeper, clearing _EVERYTHING YOU CAN_
5. Reboot again
6. Let Windows get the latest default drivers from the web
7. Install the latest ATI driver.

Good advice, better than running memtest (it's quite boring) and Sueil your avatar suits your frustration here quite well Laughing

ATI's drivers are open source, feel free to fix them.

Well, it turns out their Linux drivers are indeed open source! But shame they aren't for Windows. Sad Someone would have made a tool for custom Crossfire profiles by now... Mad

I installed those yesterday, some new profiles and various fixes, improvements and so on, AF and AA now works better compared to 9.11 and from what I've read this really helps Crossfire performance and even Quad-CF performance, Saboteur can still act up in the menu system now and then but alt-tab fixes that fairly quick, other than that I've had no issues with these drivers. Smile
(Has a profile for Avatar now as well so performance should be even better, also has profiles for Saboteur and a few other titles and a few unreleased ones.)

Can also toggle CCC "news" on and off now and some of the bugs are fixed, scaling still isn't available unless you lower your resolution one notch, set scaling and then set resolution back and "powerplay" functionality for 5000 series is supposedly a bit odd when using dual monitor setups. (Some sort of flickering or something.)

Also this isn't the 9.12 that AMD/ATI will release on their website but rather it's the 9.12 drivers that are sent to partners like Saphire and Asus from what I've seen (They're WHQL certified and everything.) as it includes both 32 and 64 bit apps and drivers and all extras like AVIVO and Hydravision in a single package yet carries the AMD logo instead of ATI logo as per 9.11 hotfix. Smile
(It's still the final 9.12 drivers however as far as I can tell.)

Did they add a profile for NFS Shift? Smile I was playing with a Dirt 2 EXE name up until now.

Shift.exe is present so yeah it has a profile, though from what I've read the main performance improvement is the 1.02 update. Smile
(But for Crossfire configurations, you use a 4870X2 don't you?, a working profile can improve performance a bit further.)

Still from what I've read Dirt2.exe renaming improves performance a bit better. Very Happy

EDIT: Pretty far down though so there might have been a more basic profile in earlier drivers.
(Newest one is BF*Game.exe which I assume is either Battlefield 1943 or Bad Company 2's beta after that is Dirt 2 and eh "dairydash.exe" followed by SamHD.exe, Sanctuary.exe, WinDVD.exe IW4?P.exe, Avatar.EXE S8Game-F.exe and so on, Borderlands, Dark Void, Saboteur, Red Faction Guerrilla and a few others like APGame.exe for Aliens Vs predator and even Ceville.exe and a few other more casual titles are present.)

EDIT: atiumdag.dll usually has the EXE names for most normal titles and applications whereas atidxx32.dll covers DX10/DX11 and test applications like AFR-Friendly.exe or Dirt 2, RE 5, Lost Planet and so on.
(Dirt 2 is present in both dll files as well.)

Yeah, there was some flickering when running through Shift.exe Smile With Dirt2.exe it was all gone and also better performance here and there (mainly no microstuttering).

How do you check which EXE files are present? Hex editing?

Yeah I use a normal hex editor, I edited my post a bit to show which files I probe, same can be done for NVIDIA drivers although the various utilities like nHancer work even better and are a bit easier to use from what I've read. Smile
(ATI is a bit more closed with less third party tools but it works pretty well, still having a profile editor in CCC somewhere would help.)

EDIT: I can't see any advanced details however but EXE names are posted as plain text but any optimization such as via ATI Catalyst AI isn't shown and neither is CF scaling like AFR or split so it's a bit vague but if there is a exe name then there is a profile for it.
(As I saw with 9.8 adding a profile for Gothic3 - Forgotten Gods.exe so you didn't have to rename it to Gothic3.exe to avoid flickering which is what the optimizations via Catalyst AI prevented, should have left the EXE name intact though during development as this doesn't cover the German version with Gothic3 Gotterdammerung.exe, hehe.)

EDIT: Speaking of foreign titles Divinity 2 and Venetica still doesn't seem to have a profile, same with many Russian titles and so on, and I can't find one for Pripyat but perhaps xrGame.exe also covers that one as the name isn't changed though I'd imagine DX11 needs it's own set of functionality. Smile

EDIT: Some of the utility EXE names are pretty interesting as well like Smoke.exe, Cloth.exe, AFR-Tutorial.exe and ScreenSpaceAO.exe there's also utility stuff like AFR-FriendlyD3D.exe which forces AFR crossfire scaling albeit it's pretty rough for most titles so normally not recommended and the opposite which is ForceSingleGPU.exe.

I still maintain that ATI are foolish not to release (or make documentation) a tool for making custom profiles. Would save them a lot of bad PR. Even outsourcing this to the community somewhat can be even better with the proper documentation. Smile

A bit off topic, but whatever. Does the 9.12 fix problems with 2D stuff in Borderlands? 9.9, 9.11 and 9.12RC2 BSOD me if I point any gun or anything with 2D menu coming up. Messed with those drivers last weekend and decided to go back to 9.7.. Borderlands is fine and so is Dirt 2 with those.

Hehe, yeah, I gotta agree that ATI still doesn't do proper job on their drivers, but they've improved since years back. By then their job was awful.

http://www2.ati.com/relnotes/Catalyst_912_release_notes.pdf

Same driver version number and CCC version as the previous one, which is expected as those are certified (ATI beta drivers aren't, as seen with Dirt 2 hotfix for example, would slow down the release process after all.)
