They settled ther legal disputes out of court today with Intel paying AMD $1.25 billion..

Intel settles AMD court case, pays $1.25 billion

Intel and AMD have also signed a five year technology cross licensing agreement
Intel versus AMD is one of the tech world’s longest running rivalries, and it came to head in 2005 with AMD taking Intel to court, alleging that Intel has been involved in vigorous and vicious anti-competitive practices.

Today the two chip companies announced an out-of-court settlement to this case and all other outstanding legal issues existing between them.

They issued a joint statement saying: "while the relationship between the two companies has been difficult in the past, this agreement ends the legal disputes and enables the companies to focus all of our efforts on product innovation and development."

As well as clearing up their legal disputes, the two companies will enter into a new five year long cross license agreement, sharing technology with each other. Intel will also pay AMD $1.25 billion, and has “agreed to abide by a set of business practice provisions.”

On his blog, Nigel Dessau, AMD's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer lists these provisions. They include [not] "offering inducements to customers in exchange for their agreement to limit or delay their purchase of microprocessors from AMD."

In return, AMD is dropping its court cases in the US and Japan, and also agrees to “withdraw all of its regulatory complaints worldwide” – these being the complaints that spurred various regulatory bodies to investigate Intel and in many cases, impose significant fines.

Considering the EU fined Intel $1.45 billion and that the State of New York recently filed suit against Intel for its hostility to AMD, $1.25 billion to call it quits and to share technology sounds like a good deal. Glad the fight is over? Or do you think AMD should have had its day in court?

Intel must have made some really shady deals and left evidence of those deals to make this kind of settlement. Usually, even when big corporations are guilty, they try to drag it out as long as possible to spread the impact over some years. AMD can really use that cash right about now.

Let's hope we can stop this stupid court war and concentrate on some more innovation in our chips. Oh and I hope Intel don't pass this cost onto their customers in way of price hikes Sad

I like intel products, but they should of had the day in court and ripped them a new one Very Happy - the payoff is nice but at same time they are just saying, look we will let you get away with most your shit if you just pay us a little bit of wonga....

To me they should be held more accountable for any shady shitty backstabbing deals etc etc they did.

Now its nvidias time i say to take the same smack.

It will get passed on without a doubt but it's not as if they're going to tell us. And as far all this new-found luv between the two is concerned, that's more worrying than any war could ever be.

Intel = The Mafia. They make threats to their customers to buy their stuff. Intel is a trash and dirty company. AMD had to pay millions just in legal fees to get this far. Intel gets away with this stuff because they know AMD cant afford all these legal fees.

Intel did not get punished at all. This system is a joke. They should have been forced to stop doing business for set amount of time and paid billions more to AMD.

If AMD goes bankrupt Intel will probably get split into several pieces because of the anti monopoly laws.

I never got around to getting a 6000, but I did have a 5500 Very Happy And before that, a pair of Voodoo 3s. I started my Voodoo love back when I picked up a Voodoo1 Accelerator for £15, then hooked it to my ATi Rage Pro, lol. Man... that combo kicked some serious, serious ass. Remember playing UT99/Q3/FFVII/SoF on that, flawlessly, and my proc didn't even meet the requirements back then (P1-200 OCed to 233)
