I dont know if anyone gives a shit besides me but here goes..

A lot of people have been trying (and failing) to convert MPEG4-AVC High Profile video in Matroska containers (i.e. the standard format on the internet for HD TV and movie rips) to a format compatible with the PS3's XMB without having to spend hours doing a full recode and it looks like Red Kawa have finally cracked it with the latest version. It's not doing any recoding of the video, just down-mixing the audio (if necessary) adding some 'special sauce' (as they put it) to the video and remixing as a .mp4 file.

I just tried with a 1.3GB Planet Earth HD-DVD rip and it worked perfectly and took about 10 minutes to complete (as opposed to the 4 or 5 hours I was seeing before for complete recodes).

This is the Holy Grail for me and means I can finally bid farewell to the XBMC Smile.

The problem with the MP4 container is it can't contain the AC3 and DTS audio formats. In order to have these intact, you'll needs to use the M2TS container. There are a lot of tools that allow you to just move from one container to another (well at least for Windows, but I guess you can use Wine).

Here is one:

BTW, this is for software or encoders, not hardware. Wink

My father has been streaming mkv's to his PS3 w/out any problems for a few months now. Doesn't matter what file extension we throw at it - it plays it, awesome sauce...

Or just use PS3 Media Server. If the MKV contains supported video, you can just remux it. This includes DTS support without re-encoding (it remuxes it to LPCM).

AFAIK the PS3 media server even transcodes on the fly if needed. Also, doesn't mkv2vob work fpr transcoding mp4 high profile?
