do you think this laptop might be good for proper gaming with games out now or to be released in the next few months?
HP Pavillion DV6-1250EL
Intel Core™ 2 Duo P8700(3M Cache, 2.53 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Hard Disk 320 GB (7200rpm), 4GB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4650, 1 GB

It really isn't all that bad. He'll be able to play most games on 1024x768 with settings on medium to high. For a laptop, that's not that bad.

most game sit'll be fine, use a low res like inatan said. I personally wouldn't ever waste money on an HP (same company as compaq pretty much, forget who owns who) |

HP's customer service is horrible. I've sworn never to buy hp again personally. There are barebone laptops you can assemble yourself from a few companies (not hp tho)..and some of the asus aren't bad either IMO. But as folks have stated, get a desktop if you want a true gaming machine..otherwise, you're paying 3k-6k US for a "desktop replacement" gaming machine.

ASUS has been making really good gaming laptops for a good price lately. They have some really good Best Buy exclusive's.
I would have bought 1 already but I HATE glossy monitors.

I was going to get a badass gaming laptop, was only going to cost 900, had a 2.5ghz core 2 duo, some 9800go geforce, 7200RPM drive, 4gb of memory etc etc but...it had a glossy screen....which i absolutely fucking hate.

A lot of laptops have that now unfortunately. Thinkpads still don't though (+ they're built like bricks, can take a LOT of abuse)!

ya I got an R60 Thinkpad right now with a core 2 duo 1.8 and 2GB of memory, but unfortunately, it's got intelGMA on it and that thing can't do shit passed DX8 lol |

I'm working with a thinkpad and that fucking things fan sucks. it is so unbelievable loud. It sounds as if it tries to drill trough the table.
And the build quality isn't all that great, mine already has a big crack on the front although I used it very carefully..
The screen has a high resolution but the background lighting is such a shitty piece of shit... you can see the bright and dark spots after a while and that is REALLY annoying.
My private 4 years old compal notebook totally owns it. Better CPU, better RAM, better GFX, QUIET!, faster Harddisk...
The only good thing in the thinkpad is the shock detector when I'm working on my way home.

Hmm never had that problem PumpAction.
I used to have a Thinkpad T42 which broke down on me when I flew to England for work last summer, worked flawless for 5 years before that. I've even seen someone knock it off his lecture table at uni (he was sleeping and someone scared the crap out of him, so he woke up and knocked it off  ), making it fall for ~1.20 meters. Picked it up and it worked just fine
@ SpykeZ: Contact an IBM service point near you if there is one, they can replace the motherboard and as a result of that the video chip for ~150 euros
Mine came with a Radeon 9600 though, Pentium M + that can run Source games at 70-80 FPS on the native resolution (1440 by..990 it is I think?) without AA

Don't think so.
I have a GeForce 7600 which is ALOT faster then the Radeon 9600 and I CAN play Source games but definitly at 70-80 FPS  especially not with1440x990
I' currently working with a t43p.
