Code: | Blood is a PC game developed by 3D Realms and Monolith Productions and distributed by GT Interactive. Development was underway at 3D Realms in parallel with a number of other well-known titles. Following the success of Duke Nukem 3D, development progress was made public starting in June 1996 with weekly updates on their website. It was originally scheduled for release in early 1997. On January 22, 1997, a press release announced that all rights had been sold to Monolith so that 3D Realms "could focus efforts on Shadow Warrior," another Build engine game slated for release the same year. Released on May 31, 1997, it utilized an enhanced version of the Build engine from Ken Silverman which featured the addition of voxels. The game falls in the first-person shooter category and has an arsenal of curious weapons, numerous enemies and liberal amounts of gore.
A sequel to Blood, titled Blood II: The Chosen, was released on October 31, 1998. In terms of copyrights and ownership, Monolith sold the rights for Blood to GT Interactive who published the games; the company was later purchased by Infogrames which has since been renamed to Atari. |

Playing Blood I the first time. Completed 2 in the past.
men, the game is insanely tough. I basically have two saves, normal, and toughest difficulty. partially due to dosbbox emulation speed ups, you can't aim and enemies hitscan even faster.
or maybe it was like that in the past. in any case, it's quite clunky. i have to play a mix of mouse aim on/off depending on the situation. stuff like killing rats is tougher than most modern game boss fights

Aww yisss, good ol' Blood!
Your posts make me want to replay it, such great moments were had back in the day. I remember that I couldn't afford the game so I had to make the best out of the puny shareware version, until a pirate friend came to the rescue..felt like christmas!
It really was/is tough, same for the sequel (which didn't manage to re-create the magic of the first one, imo), the sudden difficulty spikes could make anyone rage xD

What is this dosbox speedup you're talking about, dude?
You can set the cycles to a set number if dynamic screwes up. Or use a better dosbox build.

its the framerate fluctuations. even with a 4.6ghz haswell, the game will sometimes drop to 30 fps or lower, and it feels like it's changing speed of emulation, might not be actual speed changes.
had to use some tool to limit fps to 70+opengl helped as well.

no, it's set to max. this the default gog install, just using opengl instead of overlay.
mostly it's at the 70 fps cap, but some scenes, like lots of water or transparent glass, ton of AI, and it will tank for a brief time, and then it feels like enemies speed up/slow down. not sure if it shows in the vid I recorded above.
Anyways, beat the base game on highest difficulty, in the middle of the plasma pack episode now. that one is even harder.
I did get a lot better at the game though. at first, even killing a zombie was tough. now i mow down enemies because I know which weapon is the best for each type of enemy.
I wish more shooters did that.

Ah blood <3 Many many hours spent on that one
Probably would suck at it now seeing what they have been throwing to us the past decade.
Don't think I ever gave Blood II much of my time, didn't like it when it came out.

I started replaying Blood last night, and when looking around for mods and patches I discovered the game has an actual CD soundtrack that sounds completely different from the midi songs. Although the CD tracks are good, IMO the midis mesh better with the game.

The GOG release has borked songs, they aren't cut at the proper positions. Anyway, I am running the game with the -nocd parameter to force the midis being used because I seemed to be having problems. I do mount the iso though and the videos are playing, so it's all good.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/nightdive-studios-ceo-inquires-about-the-idea-crowdsourcing-the-purchase-of-classic-ip.62298/
Quote: |
So for apparent context this idea seems to be in regards to the Blood IP, something that has been very highly coveted but is also deemed to be very expensive in the asking price from Atari who currently own it.
|
Quote: |
Serious question: Some IP is available for acquisition but the price can be prohibitive - would you consider donating towards helping @NightdiveStudio purchase the IP? We could reward donators with remastered copies of the game and release of source code. Just an idea.
|
Crowd sourcing it huh? Well yeah it might work but it sounds like it's going to run up at a pretty hefty sum if Atari is holding it for what seems like a pretty high cost for how old and unused the IP is so it's not going to be easy to get the backers for well how many millions it could end up costing but yeah it's going to be costly.

Nightdive is such a ambiguous company. Most of their "remasters" were not much more than what GOG did in their early years.
They fucked up good with SS remake.
And now they try to minimize their costs by shifting it on the end user by crowdfunding the purchase of IP. They can call it what they won't like market sniffing but in the end it is what it is.

The remaster will happen after all:
Quote: | Atari, in partnership with Nightdive Studios, has announced a remaster of the 1997-released horror first-person shooter Blood for PC. |
Quote: | The team working on the game at Nightdive Studios includes lead engine developer Samuel “Kaiser” Villarreal, whose previous work includes The Original Strife, Turok, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil and, most recently, Forsaken Remastered. Additionally, developers Edward Richardson, James Haley, and producer Daniel Grayshon will be working on the project. |
Quote: | Upgrades
Originally developed by Monolith Productions and released in 1997, Blood remains a fan-favorite and will receive enhancements to improve the action-packed, horrifying game experience.
“Blood stood up extremely well over time and we are taking care to preserve all the qualities that made the game so special,” said producer Daniel Grayshon. “It really only needs minor updates to provide a better user experience for contemporary audiences. By using some of the functions of Nightdive’s KEX engine, we’ll be able to provide compatibility with today’s video standards, with DirectX and Vulkan support.”
Grayshon continued, “Similarly, we’ll provide compatibility with the current audio standards. We’ll add support for modern networks, Steamworks, and GOG Galaxy to bring this original game to more players. As part of this, we will preserve the accuracy of the game behavior. While these upgrades are relatively minor, we are confident that they will provide fans with a better, current generation gameplay experience.” |

It will be interesting to see how this will compare to BloodGDX, a Blood source port based on leaked source code, reverse engineering and Build engine code of course. It's a very good way to play Blood on modern PCs, I am playing Cryptic Passage now, after finishing the original 4 episodes.
