Tomorrow these two fantastic games which were the precursors to so many good games, will be celebrating their 25th birthday, well birthday of the original release at least Smile
The celebrations are happening in this thread and over at the official page
So celebrate and remember the good times.

Also you might want to check out the latest dev release of oolite you can find addons for that which enhance models, add missions, ships, weapons, systems; all sorts of good stuff for your authentic elite experience here

To celebrate the 25th anniversary I will make available in this post, a fully legit and precompiled version of oolite, which will contain the updated graphics, the best mods, the latest version, etc: a oolite compilation to end all oolite compilations at this point in time.
With the hopes that more people can have some of the experiences we had when we played elite.
As it is an open source game comprised of open source stuff you will not be breaking any laws by downloading it, and nfohump neither by providing it.

Compilation available now!

Good god, Elite is really 25 years old!? Man, never thought a game would make me feel young Very Happy I was only 3 when Elite was being played by millions Very Happy Very Happy

I loved Elite on my BBC Model B, but - and please don't hate me for this - I preferred "Elite 2 - Frontier" I simply can't count the amount of hours I lost in Frontier on my Miggy. Still stunned how Braben managed to code such a spectacular game and have the damned thing fit on a 720KB Amiga disk. It's a true masterpiece and I'm REALLY excited for Elite 3.

Thanks for the links Epsilon, mate, I'll grab it - see if I can't switch my allegiances from Frontier to Elite Wink

It's good to see so many others who also enjoyed these old games, so it's not just teenagers on the forums Smile

Oolite is a bit of a mix between Elite and Elite II, but it's a great mix imho. It's the only game that has succeeded in taking me back to those good old times of Elite, theres been many clones that have tried, but most have failed in having just the same features.

The developers of oolite didn't add much to the same basic formula, just enhanced in places, like the ai is better now, and you can have more ships on screen at the same time. But nothing that really changes the old formula.
And none of that "We know better than the original developers, so we'll change this..."

Really the only games that has ever given me the same feeling of wonder as Elite has been the X series of games.
But they still don't come close enough, though they're good games in their own right.

(i take it the screens on the oolite site are from the unmodded version, which doesn't look to appealing)

....

Yeah, because these don't look any better than original Elite, right? Laughing

I wonder which MOD does the hud the way it appears in Sabin's pics?
The hud in Epsilon's compilation looks kinda plain.

You can replace it, all the mods are in the oxp folder, so you can mix and match as suits you. The hud currently installed is configurable though.
