I installed windows vista ultimate sp1 X86 on my friend's acer lapotop a couple of weeks ago, installed all windows updates and stuff except the genuine advantage tool thingy and everything was going fine. Today he brought his laptop and his sister or someone ran windows update and now it woun't even let me log in. I start up the system, click his user name, his account is admin, it shows a message with 3 choices ~ access your computer with reduced functionality, type a different porduct key, or phone manuf. for support. I clicked the 1st option and ran vista sp1 loader 3.0.0.1 (right clicked on the thing and hit run as admin.) but I get this message whenever I click on any logo : The operating system denied acess to the specified file.
nothing shows up under control panel, I tried safe mode, same thing there too. What can I do to fix this other than do a system repair?

I fixed it last night by going to safe mode and looking under installed updates. There were 2 updates that I uninstalled (I can't remember the names) but KB940510 WAS NOT one of them so it must be a newer update. Anyhow, the system works fine now Smile

Edit: one was KB931573, can't remember the other though!

Edit2: The other one was KB933928

How many times people need to be reminded not to allow automatic updates. Disable automatic updates and never install any WGA update manually.

I know, which surprised me too. I first checked wether auto update was active and to my surprise it was not. I told him NOT to run the thing. But he must've ran something that required WGA verefication like windows media player 12 or something?Anyhow it's working fine now.
