Released by Origin Systems in 1990, the game was a marked departure from the standard formula, bringing space combat to a level approaching the Star Wars films. Set in the year 2654 and characterized by Chris Roberts as "World War II in space," it featured a multi-national cast of pilots from the "Terran Confederation" flying missions against the predatory, aggressive Kilrathi, a feline warrior race. Most impressively, cockpit performance affected gameplay: going above and beyond the call of duty resulted in medals, promotions in rank were awarded at regular intervals, and success or failure on certain critical missions would even decide the player's plot progress, "winning" or "losing".
In 1991, this game won Computer Gaming World's 1991 Overall Game of the Year award

The player takes the role of a nameless pilot aboard the TCS Tiger's Claw, a Bengal-class Strike Carrier. The player gets to name the pilot and choose his callsign. The pilot (known in-production to Origin personnel as "Bluehair," after his most notable feature) quickly rises through the ranks of the flight wing, and (presuming the player performs ideally in the cockpit) eventually leads a strike on the Kilrathi High Command starbase in the Venice system. On the other hand, if the player does not perform optimally, missions become increasingly defensive in nature and eventually the Claw is forced to retreat. Of the two endings, the "winning" path is established as canon by the game's two expansion packs, as well as the sequel, Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi. In 1994, Wing Commander was retroactively renamed Wing Commander I in a bundled re-release of both games, in preparation for the release of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. The player can talk about the missions on the carrier bar eith the other pilots, and receives breifings before and after the missions about hes performance and the state of the war.
Memorable.

I loved the first wing commander games. Bought both when they came out. I remember having to learn what the hell EMM386 (IF i remember correctly) was to get WC1 to run.
Man those were good games

I never played these, either before my time or just not on my radar. I did play the later versions though and aside from some corny FMV and all that jazz the space combat was very enjoyable. There was a free episodic Wing Commander at one point which was really good fun as well.
Freespace and Wing Commander both need rebooting.

Also never played I or II. First heard of the series when i was at my cousins place. He had WC3 (which i bought off him for a few bucks). I love Wing Commander 3. WC IV was crazy, rumour had it you needed a Pentium 150Mhz to play it with full graphics ! damn.

Unfortunately I didn't buy these games, at the time I was plenty busy with Ultima VII part 1 and 2, the Crusader games, System Shock and Bioforge to name a few Origin games.
Ahh good old Origin Systems, how I weep for your passing - EA where creativity grows stagnant.

Fantastic games at the time, wc1 was one of the games that really got me into space sim/shooters, but unfortunately they play like crap nowadays though.
Still have the original wc1 box downstairs, containing the blueprints of the raptor? ships still. These days such extras would be classed as "Limited editions" with a £5 surcharge on top of the retail price.
The Freespace2's Wing Commander mod is suppossedly pretty good, although I have never played it. http://wcsaga.hard-light.net/
