Cuz they'd notice that, and they are pretty crappy. We have a few half broken LCD monitors we can use and we have a tonne of extra overheads. We already took a few replacement bulbs and the projector. Just gotta nab the LCD. Ill post pics when its done.

For those who, like me, are seriously considering this, I've researched it for the last 2 hours, here's what I came up with:
A good place to learn how to build your own screen
A good screen material, especially if you've got a window in the way.
Now, there are two things I need before I can start hammering and nailing. One I hope the NFOrce community can help out with.
From extensive Google/Pricegrabber/Amazon/Newegg/Tigerdirect searching, I've discovered that the cheapest overhead you can get your hands on is around $100. Given the budget of the project ($250) and the cost of the LCD and materials for the frame, I see no way that this much $ can be wasted on a part advertised as $50. The one alternative I see is garage sales/Ebay, which in this case are ~same thing. Both provide you with a relatively cheap projector with unknown specifications. That is unacceptable, given the fact that the LCD must fit, and the thing has to be usable, plus maintenance (replacement battery etc) costs must be kept to a bare minimum, whereas the shit you get from garage sales will be of unknown suitability, with no guarantee, and more than likely to break down and take the rest of your $250 with it. Utterly unacceptable.
Any alternative solutions to my dillema are appreciated, and they'll go to help everyone else in my position (i.e. 99% of those considering this.) Thanks.

I thinka school might be the best place to get one. and I dont mean stealing it, I'm sure there could be a way to bargain a nice deal.
Around here, there are also, from time to time, some 'semi-secret auctions' by the municipality, I'm sure you could find a projector there..
But that's still used stuff.
BUT I bet it'd be possible to jump in and buy WITH one of those organisations..
EDIT: Let's not forget that he surely meant 250-300 USD.
And if you looked at TigerDirect, chances are your from Canada. Count a bit more.

and try it at colleges, every lecture room has at least one, and i don't know about us colleges, but here every lecture room is open the hole day and nobody would notice or care if you just carry one with you.

I'm unsure if the school would allow me to buy one thru it... mine is one of those schools that could give a shit about what you think/want/need... basically they hardly treat the student body as human beings... hardly will they bother with this.
As for colleges, I do have a pass to use a local campus, though I am not a member of the college. But a high school student walking around with an overhead projector that has "203" written on it in whiteout? I think not.

LOL, you need a pass to use campus?. That's different in Germany. It is totally anonymous here, everybody can walk on campus or go to lectures, no one checks if you have a pass. And believe me, no one would care if you walk away here with a projector as all lecture rooms are unattended.

Do you pay for college in Germany?
because if not, that's a great way to get a decent education... ask around when are the classes you're interested in, and sit in on them. Here it's all roster-based. Then again, with 200 students and 1 professor...

yup, college is free right now, but this will change. You only have to pay a small fee to enroll, without that you can't take part in tests. And officially it is not allowed to visit lectures if you are not enrolled, but nobody checks. If you are only interested in the lectures and don't want to take part in the test, then you only have to pay about 20$ and you can visit any lecture you want legally.

This opens interesting possibilities. Most anyone could procure a 15" LCD in working condition, an overhead, and a few poplar boards/sheet of BO cloth for less than $300. This is IMHO somewhat of a revolution in home theater systems: now you can use one of your walls and build a mean theater inside your house for less than you would pay to buy a decent monitor. Kinda makes you want BluRay all the more, don't it...
btw, out of my Bag of Useful Shit [tm], here is a good
guide for stretching the fabric over a do-it-yourself frame
