A mate of mine threw himself infront of a train yesterday. I only heard about it some hours ago.
I was among the last people to speak to him and I knew about his depression...now I cant sleep cos it feels like I could have stopped it from happening Sad

If he meant it he would have done it regardless of what you tried to do to stop it, you shouldn't feel at fault ... and I doubt he would want anyone to take responsibility for what HE decided to do.

you stop it, he does it next week instead. it was his (poor) decision, not yours. I don't have a problem with someone offing themselves, but with a kid it's a bit different. N=2 sample size = fail, but both of the guys I know who had a suicide (mom/dad) are still fucked up now as adults, but that was at 10 and 14.

When you're a grown up, you're accountable for your own actions unless you're otherwise mentally impaired. So as he was a grown up, the fault/responsibility is with him alone, not his friends or family.
That said, I'm sorry for your loss.

Spend time with your loved ones, they'll get you through it. If you currently mindset doesn't change in a few days, go to your doctor and get referred for some counciling.

It's likely that in a few days, you'll feel a bit better - every day it gets easier.

That sucks man Sad The father of my friends cousin did the same just a week ago. Her friend is of course devastated. But the sad thing is that they can only find half of the suicide letter. They found out he slit his wrist at home, but then changed his mind because he didn't want to be found by his family in their home and then drove away and parked by a river and threw himself in.

He was depressed and got pills for it. The family now blames the doctor that might have given him wrong pills/dosages. But well, people might react differently to anti depressives. But guess they just want to blame someone else then him.

dont feel bad mate. This kind of thing is not something you can control. Do you think he would think your an asshole for not stopping him doing something that he clearly wanted?

taking your life is final, its not a last minute decision, its against our instinct and takes a long time to prepare mentally. There was some good opinions in my thread , I was also affected by this recently and it sucks..

I'm so sorry, it's a damn sad situation...but it was his own decision, not influenced by other people's words or advices (incuding your hypotetical ones). It's impossible to enter inside the meanders of human mind, especially if someone is so devasted.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know how it is to lose a friends due to suicide. You may have known about his depression but its not your fault. When someone truly wishes to end their life its almost impossible to stop them from doing so. Cherish the good times you had together.

very sad for you my friend

but i think its extremely selfish of your friend to commit suicide in a way like that,
by doing this he costed his family ALOT of money and left them with the misery
trains beying put on hold, passengers not able to move etc etc

like i said i feel very bad for you but he could have done it otherwise without causing so much more problems for his family

I guess the idea is that depression IS being mentally impaired, chemical imbalance and all, fucks with your thinking.

Sorry to hear it Anthirs, my own brother seemed at the end of his road at one point, we were on the phone with him and he was telling us it was all over for him... we kept telling him we were going to come get him and for him to tell us where he was.

Next thing I heard over the phone was the train go by, and I was in tears... luckily, he had not stepped out in front of it.

A 13 year old girl just killed herself yesterday night. That's the 4th suicide in my former high school this year. Kids can't take the pressure, just pop. Fucked up shit.

We're all slaves to our neurochemistry, I don't think that makes us any less accountable for our actions.

The problem is that there are so many different defects of neurology that can impair thought processes that it's almost impossible to immediately differentiate between standard changes in mood and something more serious.

Then there is the fact that there is no universal definition of what is considered a healthy psyche, even though the government would like to think there is.

I guess the best we have are the personal assessments of those who know us well.
