It seems that Steam was hacked recently and all user information including credit card info was stolen.

now the question is, will everyone hold valve up to the same standards as sony, and blast valve for their inability to keep their customers safe...

we can only hope that 'no evidence' actually means that nothing was taken, rather than 'we just dont have a clue what was taken'...

From text on RPS and after you login to steam:

This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

bit of a difference between something they were directly responsible for, and something they'll swear was in no way their fault,

but fine... point taken.

i still dont believe that in this case valve will give any compensation though Smile

Of course they can. They just have to buy x numbers of skyrim copies themself.
x being the number of steam users that don't already own it xD

Not worried about CC# since I use my banks E-Card service (I create a temporary virtual mastercard with a max amount for a one-time (or multiple time) purchase that I then delete and create a new one the next time.

Password are more sensitive (just changed my steam password).

well like a fucking chump, i DID use a credit card on steam wallet to buy some gifts for hte hump group. i specifically selected NOT to remember the card info, so if it gets compromised, words cant express how fucking raged id be at valve for KEEPING that information that i specifically opted for steam NOT to.

AND i have to change my PW again... ive been hacked once before (ok yes, i put my hands up, MY fault for a dumb password), and im not eager for that shit to happen again... fucks sake, valve, seriously.

and why arent people more pissed. sony got all kinds of rage and hate from people here when this happened, but because its valve, and you all love valve, its now suddenly not their fault for not protecting their servers?

I stopped playing a Steam game, and got a notice, like the Steam Sales notice, explaining the situation. Maybe you have those notifications turned off? Also, the Steam forum has the same message up.

I'll agree that they should have sent emails out - and they still might, tbf - but they have tried to inform people.

Maybe because Sony are just blind stupid - their lame-ass algorithm for the PS3 authentication proved that. Maybe because this is the first time something like this has happened to Steam, and, yeah, they're a decent company. They screwed up, but this is what brand loyalty is about - not screaming blue bloody murder about how they've cocked up, but trusting that they're decent and learn from their mistakes. *shrugs*

Still, even if they have your PW, how are they going to get your email login?

They will if it's the same PW. And I can bet my ass that it is in more than 60% of cases.

Yup, Steam Guard to the rescue.

Unless you're dumb and turned it off. Very Happy

Yeah, changing passwords is a good idea. I have faith in Steam Guard, but it won't take long to change the password, so may as well.
