Usually after a clean install, games that require registry keys to be present I can avoid reinstalling by extracting their keys from the old hives or a registry backup.

Has anyone tried a mass registry restore after doing a clean installation of Windows? If yes, which keys to avoid restoring in order not to mess up the OS?

I was thinking a full backup of HKCU and HKLM Software, with the exception of everything from Microsoft except Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall.

It would save many of us much trouble, especially when having too many or too large games that would require to be reinstalled, patches to be reapplied, etc.

You are asking for trouble. Be prepared to be re-installing windows again.

It is not recommended. It does not take much to install a game./patches.

No, but it does take much to redownload 30gb of games because of not enough HDD space.

I know, buy an HDD. And I've already arranged to get a 500GB WD one at 40 euros.

Anyone actually tried this though and have any hints?

What' the point of reinstalling Windows if you want old registry back? Why do you need to reinstall anyway?

reapplying the registry is a retarded idea as all a windows reinstall really is good for is cleaning the registry
the change in actual system files is minimal to none

something you could actually try though, is install all your games and software in sandboxes, and after reinstalling windows, update all the drivers and directx and everything and most of the stuff would probably still work

won't work on x64 though.. m$ locking down the kernel and all that

Not only it is a bad idea, it will probably fuck up your win installation so bad you'll have to reinstall. There aren't just programs installation infos in the registry, but all sorts of configuration data, low level system info and settings, registration and setup data.... just don't go there, unless you enjoy formatting.
