Whats people experiences with using OS X on pc?
For the past year I've become quite serious with music production and specifically creating and playing my own music using a midi keyboard to accomplish this I've been using Ableton Live! and various vst's

A week ago I got a look into a very nice studio which is near where I work, and the guy there was using the same midi keyboard as me and a bunch of other stuff I couldn't begin to describe.
But he said that he used an external soundcard and stated matter of factly, that due to the better handling of audio and latency in OSX it was the obvious choice for music creation, even on a hobby basis.

So I've been thinking I want to try and setup a hackintosh, are there any musicians on this site who can verify his claims?

If you've used OSX for music production what have your experiences been? or have you experiences setting up a hackintosh and how did that go?

Obviously I believe the guy as he was a professional afterall, but I just want to hear it from others who might've tried the hackintosh approach.

I used Hackintosh when I needed to work with Final Cut Studio 2 while at home. I also worked with real Mac during that time on and off for 3 years and had nothing but bad experience. It has absolutely no advantages over PC (for what I needed). The more I used Mac and its "amazing" video editing applications the more I realised how fucking brainwashed Mac fanboys are.

Final Cut Studio is pretty crap compared to Adobe CS4 possibilities.

Maybe it's better in audio departament, I don't know. But what I used it (video editing, design, 3D) it was crap.

PC forever!

I don't know much about audio production but I have two friends who are graduates from Columbia College here in Chicago in that field. Both use Mac Pros and both have told me that they would never use anything else for their work. I think it has to do with software compatibility more than anything though.

Given the cost of Apple products it might be worth your time to fiddle around with the Hackintosh route, especially if your music is just a hobby.

Personally I walked away from PCs when I stopped playing PC games. I use an iMac for my main computer (Photoshop, Final Cut, etc) and I 'Hackintoshed' an MSI Wind Netbook for travel and when I'm upstairs away from my iMac.

I'm not sure the things you suggested a MAC deals with better (aka Latency) will still have the same postive advantages when using a PC to run OSX. Surely its down to the HW behind it?

Actually no. It's how the operating system grants software or external hardware access to the sound card external or otherwise.

I've done the hackintosh thing with my notebook. If you have the right hardware it works great but if you don't it will give you nothing but headaches.

Try it. All you have to lose is 5gb of bandwidth and a DVD.
