Hey guys,
Right now I have C2D 6300 and I feel it's time to part ways. It holds back my 4800 and shows it's age already as far as games are concerned.
Now, the way I see it, I have two directions - either good c2d, like e8500 (8400?) or a quad like q9550. The difference in price between those two models in around 50$ here, so it doesn't matter. What matters is which one would be better for games...I've already seen some games recommend a quad (shitty ports like res5).
What are your thoughts? There is the i7, but I don't consider it at all because it would cost a fortune to upgrade cpu+mobo+memory.
i7 6700k @ 4.4 GHZ, 2060s, 16 GB RAM, SSD, Windows 10x64.

Well, I think, for games, a high end dual core is more than enough. Shitty ports (ala GTA4) aside, there are almost no games that would really require so many cores.
But that's just my opinion.

your cpu should overclock on air to 3 ghz no problem
if u get e8400 this can hit 4 ghz without any kinda hassle, u can get quad, however 4ghz dc can do better job at it
and yeah what do u mean res5 is a shitty port? it run pretty smooth on 3 ghz dc + 8800gt

I should have written before that I don't overclock much. I hardly made it from 1.8ghz to 2.4ghz...so that's not really a consideration.

iNatan was talking about GTA4, which really is a shitty port. I was talking about the recently published system requirements for the PC version of the latest resident evil 5 - Intel Core2Quad Processor or better. 
On one hand, I understand that 775 slots are obsolete and 1366 is the way to go. Now considering i7 is not an option, I'm trying to figure out what would be a better investment for the long term. I need something to last me for 2 years.

Well, the best route to take, in my opinion, is to try and over clock your current CPU as much as possible and see if that doesn't satisfy your gaming needs. If not, then indeed, one of the relatively cheap high end C2D models should be more than enough for gaming needs, especially if you overclock it. |
