I'm going to assume this isn't a PC only section so let's go with a classic for the SNES

Final Fantasy VI

  • Publisher: Square
  • Developer: Square
  • Genre: JPG
  • Release date: April 2 1994
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

The game's story focuses on a group of rebels as they seek to overthrow an imperial dictatorship. For a world that has experienced senseless tragedy, magic can beget only plaintive sorrow. But the advent of high technology, which has ushered in a golden era of prosperity, has also conferred upon those with iniquitous intent the means to harness and manipulate that long-forgotten power. A grave mistake is about to be repeated.

  • Multiplayer: No
  • System requirements:
    Quote:

    Snes, Hands and a brain.

Personally i think it's the strongest in the series of all the Final Fantasy games. It has some of the strongest and most unique characters in the entire series, an absolute legend of a vilian, Kefka Palazzo the insane clown who is most likely one of the only vilians in the series to ever succeed yet have almost no real motive either. A fast paced story which never really seems rushed, brilliant graphics which hold up to this day and like almost every other RPG released on the SNES - a fantastic soundtrack.

Brutal vilian, probably the greatest to exist in a game in my opinion.

Example of the Soundtrack (Remake)

For anybody who wants to actually try out the game i'd suggest you get Zsnes and the rom for the american version, there's also totally redone versions of the japanese translated into english for the proper text, uncut and much harder gameplay than the usual but I wouldn't really advise starting on that because the FF games can be extremely hard at times.

Well I hope people have enjoyed this game as much as me and I hope that a SNES game is welcome in this section, if not by all means just delete the thread.

i'd play them for the wacky japanese shit, but i can't bear through the grinding. also the boss fights that last hours are kinda discouraging.

i got the 4th (i think) about a year ago, on the gameboy, and another one on the ps1. the ps1 one (..) was pretty fun for a while, but i gave up at some point on both of them Sad

Well alot of RPGs are like that. I think the early FF games weren't up to par as about half way through the series when Square actually put good story, characters and gameplay all together to build something worthy of playing. FF games are huge investment in time, i've spent so many days playing away at them but i'm fairly happy with what I have gained in return from them. I'm going to assume that Manu-xl has not actually played through any of the FF games or atleast not FFVI which is certainly on par with the likes of Chrono Trigger, possibly even going as far as saying much better. I know these games get alot of stick from people for being "emo" having characters who are sometimes young men with dragonball z hair but you have to ignore what people say and atleast give some of the early games a good amount of attention before actually judging them.

i would give them attention, it's just that i don't have the patience for something like that nomore. i'm about to give up on fallout3 too. it's been clogging my hdd since it came out and it's getting increasingly hard to get back into it, so i've been playing it about once every two months. when i was a kid i could play my way through an entire school holiday, now it just seems like too big of an undertaking Neutral
my ps2 owning friend has put about a 100 hours in ff12(i think) and he's been telling me these epic stories of how he's been trying for weeks to kill one of the bosses and how he got lost and grinded through the same monsters for 5 hours only to get back to his starting point. he still loves it, though Very Happy

the characters are cheesy, but it would be weird if they weren't, considering these are japanese games we're talking about.

maybe they'll try to go mainstream in the west too, so they'll shorten the battles and make'em less frequent and not random and unavoidable. although i've read somewhere that they toyed around with the idea and the japanese fans were not very pleased, so they decided against it.
i get that they're trying to please the fans, what i don't get is why the fans need those archaic elements in the game for them to like it. i mean, it would still be the same game, just less boring Surprised

I've only found a few characters to be cheesey in the entire series and they are from the PS2 games Wink anyway I totally agree about the random battles, it's so fucking annoying but i'll make do with them anyway.

I started with VII on the PS1, having never owned a snes I regrettably missed out on the previous installments, and now, it's just so difficult to become immersed in such an old looking game when you've spoiled by todays standards! I don't consider myself a graphics whore, though, I'll happily go back and play Fallout, Dues Ex etc because I played them in their day and have that nostalgic enthusiasm. Retro stuff I never played before, classic or not, I just cannot do!

Certainly if you enjoyed FF7, if you can get over the poor graphics as stated above then I see no reason as to why not? I found this game to be much more epic than FF7 and I think that says alot.

Me personally I can get along with SNES gfx better then with PS1 games from the first days of the Playstation Very Happy

And yes, if you enjoyed FFVII you're gonna enjoy FFVI pretty sure the story's just awesome and the gameplay as well. For many fans it's the best of the series (but that's a title shared with FFV and FFVII)

FFVI was the very definition of "epic" mate! Trust me, as long as you're not a graphics whore - you'll LOVE FFVI if you liked VII.

Fantastic music (best in the entire series), awesome 16bit sprite-based art, characters that weren't just carbon-copies of each other, great story, VERY long game.

This was my favourite RPG for years and years, only just barely surpassed by FFVIII.

The American SNES version is "censored" in that a few of the words were changed for the English translation and a couple of the sprites; such as "PUB" being changed to a wine glass instead, no religious content so "HOLY" is renamed "PEARL" and Siren, one of the espers, has her graphic changed so that you don't see her bare arse... but that's about it.

Don't get any version other than the SNES one. GBA/PSX all suffer from hideous audio quality and low performance, including extensive loading times. Oh wait, you could get the new Wii release, if you have a Wii. That's the original SNES ROM.

Why would you want to? Poor performance, poor audio, tiny screen and resolution ... all for what? Some "fixes" that aren't really worth anything? It's not like the original SNES game was buggy. The ONLY benefit to the GBA version is the extra content - such as bunch of new espers, weapons, armours, areas. I keep hoping someone rips that and creates a custom patch for the SNES ROM Very Happy

I really liked this game, but got stuck at some point (while fighting a train) because apparently I was underleveled and could not be arsed to grind enough to beat it. So I quit it. Might pick it up again, but I lost the savegames.... Sad

Yes, FF3-DS is great - though very difficult. FF4-DS is massively overrated, don't waste your time... I recommend FFIV The Complete Collection instead. It's a PSP game though...

Maybe I'll start replaying VI when they (hopefully) release it on the Iphone...
