GlobeStar Software + Maxis = TOTAL A*SES! Like Sims2, when someone releases a NoCD, certain CRCs or checksums look at the modified EXE and start disabling ingame features to cause inconviences.
If this isn't the lowest form of screwing the customer "in the end" I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS? Game Devs/Pubs just don't get it: up to 80% of people who buy games download NoCD cracks BECAUSE ITS IDIOTIC KEEPING THE CD RUNNING JUST TO START A GAME!! I have 2 friends who bought Kohan2 and another 4 that bought TheSims2 and damn were they pissed that they couldn't down and use a NoCD without the game treating them as criminals! Its bad enough games are starting to check for "certain" software titles that cause the game to stop on startup but to intentionally "sabotage" the main EXE is utterly unacceptable!
This is pure and unadulterated "customer as criminal out-of-the-box" mentality! GAMES DON'T SELL BASED ON HYPE - THEY SELL BASED ON MERIT. No wonder companies largely use SF3 protection on the utter crap game titles - they know they won't sell to well due to bad user recommendations so they lock it down tight! What arrogant bi*ches!
Just sad to see this assinine behaviour which ultimately hurts the customer. Maybe if game devs/pubs released quality titles (movie/music industry take note as yer product is much worse) then they'd sell better.
We're NOT STUPID! Gossip travels fast and consumers will largely not buy if the game has a bad reputation based on user feedback. Sure people buy based on the nice box art and screenshots but I feel the populas is so much more discriminating and thus not lemmings anymore.
And yet the games are worse then they've ever been!
Anyway, just had to say something after I got the word on the new Kohan2 v1.1.15 NoCD.. Just pathetic beyond words and funny that really it only hurts the customer in the end.

What does it exactly do when it detects changed file? Like makes your troops weaker?

adam: for instance your troops start to attack your own base.
Take a look at the dev forum, it's full of posts about these oddities, caused by a bad crack.
I agree with just about all the topicstarter says. in the end it's only harming the honest customer, the downloading customer will either get around it with a good crack or just not play the game which loses them no money.

A prime example of the above stated can be witnessed on the SuperPower 2 forums. There are threads upon threads of legitimate customers who've been unable to play due to copy protection, their drives getting screwy due to starforce 3, and loads of other problems due to the protection.
There's also roughly an 8 page thread (last I checked), of consumers voicing they will not buy the product due to SF3.
However, not to stereotype but, The Sims 2 appeals MAINLY (not all) to the know nothing teens/women/kiddies. They'd buy, no matter if Starforce 10 was on it, that required a background check and blood sample to boot up
Again, not stereotyping (as I play Sims2 myself, and don't fit into this categories), but look at the sales statistics.
The point is, until the MAJORITY of consumers stand up to the bullshit that is modern copy protection, developers will keep raping the legitamate consumer while he has a smile on his face. Unfortunatley, for this to happen , the general game buying public needs to be educated about this shit, which probably won't occur in due time
The same goes for rushed releases via developerrs. No more of that ship now patch later bullshit, as seen with Men of Valor. Sure, NVidia got on its toes and put out some drivers, but it was CLEARLY not ready to be shipped in the state it was in. Too many people are complacent about this shit, which in the long run ends up screwing us hardcore gamers
Rant over. Feel free to flame, but Im just stating my opinions, didn't mean to offend.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

No man.. yer bang on! I think things will cleanse themselves of the BS overtime. Crackers need to compensate for now but eventually humanity will come around. At least there are outcries at present regarding the scourge that is SF3! Just sooo sad PC companies are resorting to this AND YET all my Xbox friends have modded consoles and just sucking down the freebies with ease! Hell.. playing on Live for free too!
Thankfully, notice that 90% of the QUALITY TITLES do not have real-anal protection scheme? Doom3, SW: Battlefront, Full Spectrum Warrior, Rome: Total War and likely HalfLife2 (hehe.. which will be cracked in, ohhhh, -20sec as everyone and their left testicle wants it). Games with high impact/hype need only that to sell! Other lesser titles need BS protection schemes to give "the impression" they need to lock-down their property where in the end, they are only pissing off the customers they are trying to help. Utter despicable!
