I had to post this on my mates behalf  its such a kick in the balls.
To cut this very very long story as short as possible, we have to go back to 2006. He was in a relationship for 4-5 months with a total hell cat, hot as fuck but full of poison. The breakup was nasty, this bitch was a total psycho. She practically ruined his life in the space of just a few weeks.
Anyways. Life moved on, he saw some new girls after finally losing the psycho (he moved house + changed numbers).
Well anyway. About 4 months ago, he met this chick online called Jessica. I have to admit, she is fucking hot. Like, a 10. easy. So I can feel for how much this hurts... read on
So theyve been seeing each other for a good 3 months. Hes really really obsessed with her, and she seems to be perfect for him too. But the bombshell came at her 22nd birthday party. She spoke about a best friend who she hasnt seen for 6 months or so as she went on a work trip ; and is back for her birthday. So we are all chilling at the party (I had no idea what was about to happen). Next thing I know, Im getting a drink at the bar and this familiar face walks in. Its Katie, his fucking psycho ex. So I think "oh shit".. anyway. She goes straight over to Jessica and kisses her on the cheek. Yeah, SHE was the best friend. I almost shit my pants and dropped my drink on my feet. I quickly pulled my mate outside and explained what I just fucking saw I hate to say it but he actually almost cried. He quickly got into a taxi and went home (he told jess he had a family emergency ; yeah, stupid fucking drunk excuse, we came up with his gran dying.. but his gran is alive very much alive + jessica has met her.)
He doesnt know what to do. As far as were aware, neither his ex nor his new GF know its him yet, and they didnt see us leave. She keeps calling him asking how hes feeling and that shes sorry about his gran dying. So now, he not only has to make the decission to stay with this girl of his dreams knowing her best friend is his psycho ex and shit will REALLY hit the fan cos this bitch is nuts, AND fakes his own grandmas funeral some how.. Or he lets her go.
I hate to say it but it sounds like its straight out of American Pie or something I feel sorry for him cos this type of unlucky shit happens all the time.

Well, its obvious he needs to come clean and tell her (Jessica) everything. Then play things out from there. Very simple first step IMO.

Mistake #1: Lying to new girl friend
Never a good idea
he has to tell her that her friend is his ex
He has to tell her that the breakup was bad. Maybe not stressing the pscho part so much.
Sooner or later the new girl is going to find out. She has to choose him, her friend or the middle path. He has to decide if he can live with the middle path.
the longer he puts this off and the more he lies the higher the chance the new girl will choose her friend over him. If the ex is as psycho as you say then as long as he stays calm and honest the new girl will probably notice that aswell.

he has to get his story out if he wants to be w/ her. if the breakup with the ex is something to write home about, then he's fucked. But then again they dated loads, so she might say good things about him and maybe a threesome  and maybe the crazy psycho ex will just go and stab his g/f in the back

Still, tell him what the deal is and that their relationship (your bud's and Jessica's) has nothing to do with his previous relationship from 3 years ago.
If this Jessica can't deal with, she isn't worth committing too. I'd play along, fuck her brains out for a week or 2 and blow her off. Straight up.
