I've recently installed vista on my pc and it is miles better I'm using windows ultimate 64 bit version.
Alot better then xp now due to the speed.
What does everyone else think?

Nothing wrong with Vista 64 over here. But then again nothings wrong with XP either. I just prefer to pointlessly play DX10 titles and take the 400% performance hit.

Well, I never liked the original Vista release one bit, and I don't think SP1 changes things drastically... that said; I'm now using it in anticipation of Windows 7 and it's working just fine. I'm a bit of a knuckle dragger on Vista as well, so it's not easy writing that... but yeah, that's the truth. I don't think it's anywhere near as good as Win7 though... I think I might end up buying that on release (just to avoid all the hassle of cracking and updating).
(XP is still marginally faster in typical operation - Vista is always doing something, and maybe you can disable that I don't know - but it's true that XP is more 'silent running' than Vista)

xp 32bit and hackintosh osx here - never felt the urge to upgrade to vista, but i'll switch to dual boot once win7 rc1 comes out

for me the only difference between xp and vista is the changes to the audio hal. otherwise performance wise they are the same for me (to within a percent or so). Win7 seems no quicker than either for me but server2k8 seems to be faster during use (for my setup vista & xp = 32bit. win7 & server2k8 = 64bit).
XP = pro audio, Vista = gaming & day2day, server2k8 = experimenting, Win7 = everyday & gaming once final is released
intel i7 3770k @4.4, ASRock Z77 Extreme 4, 16GB Corsiar Vengance 1600 ram, ATI 5850 BE, Antec 1 Case, Antec 1 550W PSU, emu0404, 120gb agility3 ssd OS, 2x60gbvertex2raid0 Games, 3 TB total sata2 Data. win7 x64.

hey, question guys... im still very happily on xp - have a legit key and everythin', (just dont ask how i got it  ) so ive always been hesitant to pirate vista, because i just dont want the hassle of it throwing a fit over a blacklisted key or whatever..
ANYWAY, im finally thinking about upgrading to vista, which means buying it - is vista worth buying? how does it run in comparison to xp, how is gaming performance, etc...
also, is it worth going to vista, or do i get a 100% recommendation to wait and go with win7 when its released? (when is it releasing, anyway? - OFFICIALLY, i dont really feel like messing around with anything that isnt final)
so yeah... what to do? stick with xp, buy vista, or wait for win7 - im prepared to wait for 7, because whatever choice i make, i intend to stick with it for the next few years, so i dont mind waiting for 7's release if its THAT head and shoulders over vista....
and in regards to vista/win7 - im not going to run into trouble with these OS in terms of the massive amounts of software i pirate, am i? that may seem silly, but realise that i have been with the incredibly tolerant and kickass winxp for like the last 72 years (or there abouts  ) so im pretty damn admittedly ignorant over the new OS's

pro audio? If you're talking about ASIO capabilities I can tell you that ASIO is 100% supported in Vista and Win7. I'm using ASIO 2.0 on my X-Fi Platinum with Reaper (amazing sequencer for an amazing price).

get the win7 release client (should be out soon) and test it, if you don't hate it right down to the bone by the time it's released (should be somehere in autumn), then get it. no reason to upgrade from xp to vista when the next-next-gen OS is right around the corner
and i don't think that vista/win7 do anything about pirated software (although they "phone home" more and more stuff) - and why should they? no need if there's already RIAA copycats in place to hunt the downloaders and the BSA to fuck pirates err...potential customers

using both 32 and 64 bit vista here ... upgraded from xp a little while back.
honestly I don't notice much of a difference between the two, besides the slightly fancier UI.

If you buy Vista you can avoid the hassles of copy protection, but you can also get a better deal on upgrading to Windows 7. As far as I know you can buy the (much cheaper) upgrade version of Vista and install it without XP, but whether the same can be said for Win7 we wait and see...

If Rinze could analyse what operating systems are most used in this part of the forum I imagine less XP users. I only came in here after thinking about Vista and trying W7 beta, but that's just conjecture if it's the same for everyone else.

If Rinze did that analysis, I'm sure XP is still the predominate operating system, mostly I'm afraid, because of the usual "Vista is for teh noobs, XP is for teh cool" mentality and stereotypes. I'm sure of it, because it is all over the internets, on forums, and even with some P2P release groups, which remove DX10 features on purpose, because they use XP.

Of the whole forum undoubtedly, but I meant in terms of those users who visit the 'operating systems' sub-forum. I imagine in that respect it's much lower - but that's a wild guess based on my own experiences.

But on release XP was the better choice, especially for gamers or indeed anyone relying on applications/hardware that didn't play nice with Vista. I do remember hearing the same arguments with XP when it was first released, but regardless that was the reality for me and many others.
Things have changed now, but the difference is that there's nothing gobsmacking about Vista that demands anyone to retry it once more to see that it's a stable operating system worth using as your first choice... so the old arguments remain and people are stubborn about it but I guess if they could be bothered to upgrade they'd change their mind. Still, if you are happy in XP there's not a big reason to. |

Yondaime..i'm in the same boat as you  ...sticking on XP SP3 32bit
if ya goin to have 8GB,get Vista 64bit,since 32bit only catches like..3,2GB,even if Vista 32bit says it has 4GB on the MY PC's properties (FAKE!!!!!)
The only prob,as you said,is the 64bit driver compatibility...i've tried all my software and works flawless...except one,wich makes me stay away from Vista 64bit..Pinnacl Studio 12..my Dazzle Video creator Platinum's drivers are NOT COMPATIBLE..that means i cant capture from TV...and that's a program i use on certain days constantly...the rest works,including photoshop CS4 (If you install Adobe Master Collection CS4 it already contains both 32/64bit editions of PSCS4 )
Yep,some software might have lil problems..but with Vista SP1 i had none of em ^^...for now (waiting for SP2..thou that wont do a shit about performance on the OS or games)..
All 32bit programs installed on a 64bit Vista will be installed in a folder in your hard drive,called Program Files x86 (32bit)..so they're compatible no matter version..but of course,64bit makes stuff..better?

No games I have ever tried have ever had problems with 64bit XP or Vista. XP64 had some problems long time ago, but that was due to very poorly written drivers, an issue which is non-existent on either XP64 or Vista. The only potential problem is, if you run old 8-16bit (aka DOS, Windows 3.1) applications, but you have DosBox for that.

Weren't you complaining AERO was taking like 2MB in RAM? In so many threads I have seen you complain about bullshit reasons why you don't want to upgrade to Vista. |

yeah,i wrote the AERO thing n stuff..i would upgrade to Vista,but to 32bit..whenever my pinnacle gets 64bit version of my capturer (wich i think it wont) i'll change 2 64bit..meanwhile nope..
PD: Is there a way on Vista to not be able to choose the desktop when ALT+Tab'bing?..i had probs with that when playing Team Fortress 2 on a window with no other windows on...
