Both games are my favorite. I also very much like X-COM Apocalypse.

I remeber I was playing this game at my friends house. Totally forgot about time and didn't notice my firend had gone to bed. Then I wanted to ask him something and only then did I notice he was asleep. It was 3 AM and I remebered I had school tomorrow. Very Happy No exam luckily, but my mom was pissed off and said she'll never buy me a PC. Very Happy

A very good site for all X-COM games (check their Files section) : Strategy Core

Absolutely amazing game, finished it a million times. Always great to play again and kick alien ass.
BTW. The game's intro is one of my all-time favs - great music (despite the old standard)!!

Yeah, without a doubt the best game(s) ever. I have played them both through countless of times and I still get around to them like once every two years.

Yeah, I played the original 4 years ago and got hooked bad ! The atmosphere is unreal !

It is so deep and addictive ! Certainly one of the best games ever ...

I wish there was a more updated version.

I usually play my dos games under dosbox in Linux, but recently I've had to spend a lot of time with Windows 7 at home, and I realised how crappy the midi patches were there. I looked into the possibility of changing them.
But apparently Microsoft, in their wisdom, removed this functionality from Vista and upwards, restricting custom soundfonts to users of specific Creative software what a load of shit!
So here I bring you the software synth used in Linux, but compiled for windows, with the Real 3R patch, which is argueably the best sounding patch there is.

1. Run the Setup_Eng.exe file and install to C:\timidity this is an easy way to get the device driver.
2. Extract the archive to C:\ overwriting the previously installed files.
3. Go to C:\timidity
4. Execute twsyng.exe
5. Right click the little speaker icon with the red keyboard and click "start synthesizer"
6. Doubleclick "PLWMidiMap.cpl" and select Timidity++ Driver as default device, press ok.
7. Play your favorite Dos games through your favorite frontend with far better sound - Enemy Unknown et al greatly benefits here, just listen to the main theme to notice the difference.

Does anyone know of good way to fix the superfast scrolling at the battlescape ? I've set it to 1 and I've forced vsync, still it's annoying.

I'm using collector's edition of xcom1 + modified game's exe to use 1 core only + vista/win7 fix to the exe + latest f0dder's loader to fix several problems (minifreezing, too fast animations etc) + modified/fixed game resources. Took me 3 hours to figure things out, although I could have gone the DosBox route.

xcomutil uses a 16-bit exe it seems and doesn't work correctly on win x64, UFOExtender is a loader itself and with it I get garbled colors ingame, although it fixes the scroll issue. So I have to use f0dder's loader.

You patch the game with xcomutil 'in' dosbox. Dosbox emulating a 16 bit OS Wink

Lol I know about Dosbox, but I went into all the trouble to get it to run natively to prove my superiority over normal humans. Aren't there keyboard shortcuts to scroll the battlescape ?

P.S.: I think I'll just use Dosbox, cause the mouse movement is also too funky. Laughing

P.S.:2: Ok, it's fine now + xcomutil to get rid of cheapskate mind control ...

Mind control is what makes it challenging in the later game, until you get some soldiers who can learn it as well.

Those later UFO titles (If I understood the game you meant correctly.) require some fan patches and such but should be OK otherwise aside from being a bit buggy. Smile
(Bought Xenonauts a while ago but haven't done anything with it yet, seems like a good - indie - follow up to these Ufo titles and well that other upcoming ~ufo game.)

I never played X-com, because i didn't like turn-based games (or so i thought).

After seeing some gameplay of the new X-com game, i just bought it because i looked like a good game. I loved it and am still playing.

But after reading a lot about it not being nearly as good as the original, im thinking about picking the original up.

So my question is, what it the best way to set-up this old game and play it.
I wanna play it as original as it can get, but i do want it to be patched with thing like XcomUtil to fix some bugs. I've looked at the Steam-forum but i want to know you guys have some other ideas.

@ Epsilon
Anny chance you can upload your midi patch again.

The best way to play it is VMware + WindowsXP @ 1024x768 + X-COM: UFO Defense Windows version + UFO Extender in Direct3D9 full screen mode.

UFO Extender fixes so much more than XcomUtil.

The ability to see weight FTW So Much Win

EDIT: With VM method, you can play in window of any size without the blur of scalers.

openXcom 0.9 was just released recently
http://openxcom.org/
it's an engine remake that eats original enemy unknown files - scummvm style
it's completable and feels pretty full for me
also has a bunch of small improvements in options
also, CRT-emulation Very Happy
you can increase render resolution in the .ini, but currently the UI and mouse events are not mapped correctly if you change it
hopefully in a future version we can play at hd resolutions
in the meanwhile there's tons of scaler shaders

I have only recently found out about this mod :

X-Piratez
http://www.openxcom.com/mod/x-piratez
https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?board=18.0
(DL link is in a sticky on forum)

Quote:

X-Piratez is the biggest Total Conversion Mod for OpenXcom to date.

WHY WAS IT MADE?
Because Openxcom is an excellent tactical engine that allowed me to create what is basically a whole new game, set in the same universe as the original but played differently.

WARNINGS:
1. Contains (a little) NUDITY. You've been warned.
2. Do not install Openxcom nightlies! They are not compatible with Piratez.
3. If you absolutely can't stand bikini babes fighting Nazis with chainsaws, you may suffer some trauma.
4. If you're looking for a tactical game that doesn't require brains, try DOTA instead.

WHO IS THIS MADE FOR?
THis mod is for people who:
1) Want to play a different game.
2) Want more options.
3) Like big games.

A very good and very big mod. I'm 6 months into the game and I think just scratched the surface.
