Developed by the guys behind X-COM, Magic & Mayhem is surely one of the best fantasy RTS games ever. I read that it was based on a game called "Chaos: The Battle of Wizards", which I remember on the Sinclair spectrum (an 8-bit system). M&M also spawned an inferior sequel - avoid it at all costs!
In order for your wizard to defeat the enemy wizard, you have to capture 'places of power' which give you the magical energy to cast spells and summon creatures to fight for you. It plays a bit like Sacrifice and Demigod. And it's set in a beautiful, atmospheric Celtic (initially) land.
The best aspect of the game is that it lets you experiment with different strategies. One of my favorites is to have a skeleton army spreading disease amongst the enemy, or send out a flock of phoenix bombers. Someone else might play with a completely different style. And there's a little bit of randomness each time you play a level.
