Im really keen to give this extreme sport a try. Can cost about £1000 to learn to a level whereby you can fly solo, and the gear costs between £1500-3000.
Take the plunge and start learning to fly light aircraft... expensivish now i think, was only 55 pounds a shot each lesson when i did it but think its more around 80 now.. But was THE best thing ive ever done for a hobby.
My father tried to get me to take up gliding as well but not after i saw some of his vids when he did it lol, frack that, very small seperation in a thermal doing hells of speeds with no engine all circling together and seeing other peoples wings come past you like you could touch it lol.. Noooo thanks ill stick to an engine.
But flying light aircraft is not that easy / cheap once you're qualified. Say at £100 a less, it takes 30 lessons - ok £3000 and i'm there. but the expense of flying a light aircraft (sharing one / renting / buying) is massive - and out of my league at this point in my life.
The idea about powered paragliding is its going to be cheap - and I'm assuming I can legally take off from any field in the UK...
I've no first-hand experience myself, but I'm very interested - mainly in Hang Gliding / normal non-powered paragliding because of the lower starting costs (and I'd imagine much easier transportation if you want to go abroad later to check out some cool sites). With today's gear you can fly for hours even without an engine like the powered paragliders use.
I've only done a few parachute jumps myself, but even those (low altitude for beginner obviously) were a hoot.
Definitely keep this thread updated if you're gonna go for it anytime soon!
Edit: 'the fuck, what kind of video was that to showcase the sport? Worst music ever.
you will probably still have to pay a landing fee lol, robbing bastards that they are
Pricey but isnt everything thats good in life for the most part.. you could always say to yourself ok its gonna cost but im gonna aim for it and I WILL do this.. Its hard for me to put across how awesome your first take off circuit and landing is done by urself, just cant put it into words really..
Still if it really is that much out your reach I guess hovering around the air with a fan attached to your back might be suitable hehe.. not for the weak hearted for sure lol..
No no not like that no more im afraid, my dad used to work for bristows helicopters at redhll aerodrom in UK as a radar and avionics engineer.
When he used to do favours for peoples aircraft fixes etc he used to take some as free time for me with the tiget club flight school based there instead.(as in instead of payment he would get them to book me hours flight instruction, this wasnt always though I also paid myself for a the last year of my time doing it at 17)
Then I took my ppl solo flight and the rest is history.. Although now my licence is not flight worthy at this time as I need to do some hours to get back in the seat before they will set it active again hehe..
My father owned a Part share in a Cessna 152, bought himself a Jodel, and later in life sold that to mess about in a plane you can build urself called a Nipper.. single seat thing hairy as hell uses a VW car engine for most part.. hehe.. He used to keep these at goodwood aerodrom near chichester UK.
As for cost If i recal if hired say a cessna back in the day (not sure what it is to date now) was around 60-70 plus fuel plus landing fee of say 9 quid.. dependant on where your flight plan was to. I used to fly between Redhill, shoreham, cardiff, gloucester, goodwood. All my time and money tends to go on myself at home now, and lookin after my son.
Im sure he will start dabbling in those areas of hobby types as well if hes anything like myself..
