It could be good, first one sure was. It could also end up really lame... something most horror movies do very well.

I just hope it doesn't have an over-abundance of CGI, as the use of classical effects is part of what made the Carpenter version awesome.

I love the original the thing from another world. But Carpenters version is in my favorite for sure. The special effects are still amazing to this day, I must have seen the movie 20 times LOL I hope this can capture some of that brilliance. Great that its not just a remake but a whole new back story. Moore has written the screenplay so that could be good, being a BSG fan.

awww but a helecopter pilot? come on... they afraid too much originality might make our brains explode? why cant she partner up with an alcoholic korean tv repair man, or a russian pastry chef?
dont get me wrong, i love sci-fi and so im looking forward to this to some degree (given that theres precious little sci-fi films made these days), but my HOPE for this is that they make the film 'their own', instead of getting bogged down trying to reference the previous film, saying LOOK LOOK IM CONNNECTTEDD TO THE PREVIOUS ONE! YAY IM CANON!!
you know... kinda like exactly how they utterly fucked up terminator 4...
ill give it the benefit of the doubt, but reading the plot summary has me a little worried. but i HOPE... i hope that they do a good job, i dont want it to fail.
i also hope they dont have a fucking hot wire in blood sequence.....

It ain't a remake, it's a prequel.

ok, i officially have a boner on for this
the female lead sounds silly, but i'll let it slide if they get it together on other fronts
she's very pretty and all but the original was pretty much the ultimate isle-of-men-film with not a single female character on it, adding to the sense of total isolation

yeah but thats what worries me. if its just a bunch of men theres no need for any of this 'posing' bullshit. theyre just trying to survive. theres nothing fake about it.
but throw a 'hot sexy intelligent chick' into the mix and you risk turning it into a girl-power flick, where suddenly all the guys are acting like dumbshits but she never screws up because she has a vagina.
im not saying it WILL go that way, just saying that theres always that risk of turning films like this into a chick empowerment flick. all i can hope for is that they show some maturity and restraint, which is a fucking huge ask when it comes to the film industry.

Anyway, I hope they manage to create same kind of feeling as the first one had. The scene where they are tied to the chairs checking the blood is just epic...same with the one where they use the defibrillator! Those two scenes are just awsome!

but like i said, theyd better not USE that blood hot-wire thing. if they did, that'd just kill this movie for me.

well, it's pretty much the only excuse to have them speak english at all
if the film focuses on this character, then most people around her would speak english and there wouldn't be need for that much subtitling
but that's also one of the worries i have.. that it has a specific lead character
in the original, macready was 'the lead' i guess, but it was because of his actions throughout the film that made him stand out from the ranks of fairly evenly covered characters - not by being directly portrayed as a hero
he was just a man who got his act together when shit hit the fan
like ripley was 'the lead' in alien, and you woudln't figure that out until 2/3 through the film
it helps sell the film and it's suspense when you can't tell who The Lead Character(tm) is until they have to step up to the plate

It is rather odd, what was once a completely Norwegian research station with team suddenly not only 'grow' US team members but is led by an American microbiologist from NYU.
On top of that there is some American pilot involved.
Remember the evidence they bring back from the Norwegian base?
Its ALL Norwegian, all the video is of Norwegians speaking Norske.
I would rather have had a sequel with US actors OR a prequel with Norwegian actors.
Perhaps a mix of International members for a sequel but prequel?
Nah...................................................

Regardless of language and plot holes to cover the american actors I don't have high hopes for this one. John Carpenters The Thing was a masterpiece of suspense and paranoia. This will most likely be a cheap knock-off with some skin and action replacing most of the stuff in Carpenters movie.

but why worry? its not TRYING to replace it, so we dont need to be so critical of it. enjoy it for what it is, and if it turns out shit, youve lost nothing. if it turns out pretty solid, then fantastic.
