I want to go AM3 at this point.....

Can you guys post a good MOBO, CPU, RAM combo?

I LOVE Asus, will only buy Asus boards.....

PLEASE HELP!

AMD 720 black edition, just as the 940 it OCs to 3.4ghz no matter your mobo or ram on stock voltage 100% of the time.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649&Tpk=amd%20720

no need to go ASUS if you dont have to, im sure you love it but why not buy a GIGABYTE ? believe it or not its better quality , and cheaper at the same time, and ill gladly back that up.

Gigabyte ultra durable 3 mainboard, 790x northbirdge , 750 southbridge

check the cost of the ASUS board without the ultra durable setup

Anyway, as for RAM

i agree 110% with stefan F Gigabyte are the best motherboards, never ever let me down & can take LOTS of abuse specially when you first learn how to overclock one. Very Happy

Ok, here is what I am planning so far.....feel free to step in and give advise. (I'm sticking with ASUS, LOVE asus)

When looking over these three parts.....can someone ensure me that they are all 3 compatable? It looks like they are, and I'm ordering them TONIGHT, so I need to know quick.

Not anymore, I'm concerned about compatability, and the fact that I have a few dollars to throw at these 3 parts if needed.

Please give advice as I will be ordering from Newegg tonight.

its compatible.... but unless you do video encoding for a living , i would urge you to get the 720 cause of the unlocked multiplier , means 3.6ghz on air easy, it would be a lot faster than the quadcore at 2.6ghz

I hardly encode video, but am a HUGE gamer.....but I don't overclock. I prefer stability at the cost of performance.

I really appreciate your help Stefan, think I should up the ram quality? I only need 4 gigs, but am curious about latency timings, etc, etc.

sorry i went to bed, especially if you are a gamer you should get the 720 BE cause of the way higher clocks, and its even cheaper as the quad you are selecting.

As i said about the overclock, the black editions dont have a multiplier lock, that means you dont have to screw with FSB(yeahyeah i know) HT link freq, or anything else.

You simply set the multiplier in the BIOS from 15 to 17, you dont need to do ANYTHING else, you can use the most crap mobo and crap ram, multiplier is only related to the CPU, you dont even have to touch the Voltage of the cpu if you up it to 3.4ghz.

Heat is no issue either, my brothers 940 at 3.4ghz doesnt go over 40C temp on load with a zalman cpu cooler on silent mode.

Welcome to the AMD boat, wont go back to intel.

that cpu is am3, the mobo you listed supports am2/am2+ and the whole thing about socket am3 is that it uses ddr3 ram.

that setup is not compatible.

that setup looks good i was thinking of getting a am3 setup but im not sure about the am3 cpus that are out right now, there isnt any that are 3.0 stock and the 4mb L3 cache turned me off.
but im not sure if the speed difference with the ddr3 ram would make up for the difference in the cache or if the caching is different all together on the am3 and am2+ setups.... so idk. im really taking my time and doing as much research as i can before making the decision.

AM3 CPUs fit on AM2+ AND AM3 mobos

AM2 mobo = ddr 2
am3 mobo = ddr 3

AM2 CPU = ddr2
AM3 cpu = ddr2 + ddr3

so they are backward compatible but wouldnt it be best to get an am3 motherboard and ddr3 ram if your getting a am3 cpu?
i dont see the logic in buying a system and not having it all run at its full potential.

from toms hardware

"And you'll need DDR3 memory, which remains significantly more expensive than DDR2. Given no real tangible performance gains and really only the energy savings of which to speak, stepping up to a fully AM3-compatible platform, not surprisingly, doesn't make sense today. "

the setup stefan posted is actually a great setup, I havnt been up to date on hardware for the past year and after re looking at everything I think that x3 720 you linked looks like gold, its almost $100 cheaper than the quad 3.0 and seems to about the same in gaming performances.

those X3's seemed kinda silly but since the 720 came out, ill probably get that one.

i guess i should research more before babbling on Razz

hey stefan do you know if that mobo has ACC feature?
I guess if the mobo has ACC, you can enable it and sometimes it will activate the 4th core on x3 cpus.

dont worry about ACC, its build into the new phenoms ( turning it on in the bios will give you serious booting issues )

just to chime in....

boots in 11 seconds, runs cooler with stock cooler than my fx60 with zalman heatsink/fan....

AMAZING options for overclocking, but........no need to.

Runs GTA4 at 67 FPS.........(also google ultimate visuals mod) I SWEAR TO GOD IT IS PRACTICALLY PHOTO REALISM

Old rig ran it at 22

NFS runs at least 60

NBA 2k9 looks real, and runs better than life, kinda creepy

Worth every dime

Oh, and stable as can be.
