IGN.com is reporting that Doom 3 will ship in late July or early August. Later the Xbox version will ship in October. The source for these release dates is a retail chain that wishes to remain anonymous. With all the delayed games this week looks like one is finally getting out before the fall of 2004.

While Activision has yet to provide an official release date for Doom 3, two separate sources, one being a retail chain (which asked to remain anonymous), said they expect Activision to release the PC version of Doom 3 in late July/early August, with the Xbox version following in October.

The main reason the game's date hasn't been officially announced, we believe, is because the development team, Id Software, is known to take its own sweet time with its games, while obviously working with new technology, a complex and sophisticated engine, and what is apparently a massive game.

We've yet to see a DoomIII test version and it's unlikely that the game will go gold before that...

What is a test version and what makes you think we would see such a version if it existed.

Doom 3 was not at e3 whatsoever (for pc that is) because id said that they are finalizing the game for release. 1) that is stupid to not show it just because it is getting close to done but 2) It means that time frame is VERY possible, and probably true

In the last 2 month, a project like Doom3 can't be timed at all.
I mean, the week before the gold passage, the devs won't probably even be able to tell if it will be finished the next day or in 2 months. Wich is why we probably won't have a release date before just 1 or 2 weeks before release.

As for gold, it happened for a few games (like morrowind) that the gold passage was just around 3 day before release.

Let's say that jul/aug is a quite reasonable guess.

Note : Doom3 was one of the most delayed game of all those big FPS block busters, with new generation engine.
In fact, only far cry wasn't delayed that much, and wasn't a deception.

@nubman
Test version is kind of public beta. An almost finished products, wich is distributed as a demo with 1 or 2 levels over internet to test the game in wide scale. The last tweaking to finalize the game are done from this test.
Carmack usually does one for his games (like he did for quake 3).

However, he stated a long time ago that there wouldn't be any test for doom3, since it's mostly a single player game. SP game don't require tweaking and intensive tests like MP game.
So unless I missed a latter declaration and he changed his mind after, there won't be any test for doom 3.

Q3test was great! Any chance of a DOOM test?
You're in luck. id Software has stated that there would be a test released prior for bug squashing and play compatibility. The first Multiplayer demo was released at QuakeCon 2003 for the visitors attending.

We seem to be picking up conflicting reports...
