The more I read statements the developers make, the more I bump in to this line (paraphrased) : "... so people wanted this and that to look sexier, cooler ... so we listen to our player base, and made it such this time around, we want you to feel the intensity of the situation ... etc"

Now, I have a question: does this feedback really come from the playerbase? Does somebody play DA1, and the post on the official forums, that their character wasn't looking AWESUM ENUF, while walking in a city? Are we gamers really like that? Did anyone, who played chaos theory, go to the dev's site, and claimed: fuck it, sam fisher is not enough of a synonym for panther, plox fix?!

The first question is, do players really say stuff like this?

I mean, do people like losing control and depth of their character, for the sake of instead looking kick ass? Yes, they associate themselves with the character, so when the character does something kick ass, they imagine they are not the fat fucks they are in real life, and instead are ninja-pirates saving the world ... while looking awesome, and getting laid... But I thought the joy of gaming came from outwitting your opponents, building a good RPG character ... putting thought and effort in to something, and succeeding ... ah, but then, the game would have to be challenging to begin with.

In order to feel you achieve something, you have to actually achieve something, which is hard to do, when you can finish your game no problems, while sleeping and cooking at the same time.

Do you guys hold it so important to be kick ass and looking cool, from cool angles? I don't think so. Does the majority? If yes, then we are all fucking then, no wonder we get games like these ... we generate the need for them...

You are looking for the console players.
Not the PC players.

DA1 sold more on the PC, yet they say they're changing it based on feedback.

Wrong place to ask Smile

NFOHump is just a tiny and insignificant slice of the big cake of those who are actually leading the game industry to the complete collapse in terms of quality and innovation..

edit: You could create a similar thread at GameTrailers, for example. It would be nice to read the comments/feedback Laughing

They're changing it because their marketing guys say it'll sell better if they change it. Has nothing to do with feedback; they already have the sales of those who come with feedback, they want new customers.

This.
If they are accurate or not, I don't know, but they did have some pretty statistics for ME2.
http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Commdor/BioWare_Releases_ME2_Statistics
So it doesn't surprise me that in fact they are in part listening to the shitty fan base. I want to believe that DA fanbase is different, but who knows.
I'm sure there are more reasons.

This is a question I've been asking myself for a LONG time. Whenever they say "we listened to the players and...." I just want to pull the head off a small furry animal. WTF? They sure as fuck didn't listen to any "players" I know of! Not a single person have I EVER known, or read posts of, has ever said;

"Boy, the RPG elements in Mass Effect suck. I wish they'd remove them and make it a corridor shooter!"

Shit, I don't even remember any CONSOLE gamers saying that. Ever. So when a developer says they "listened to the players..." I already know that they're fucking full of shit and no longer deserve a penny of my money. Ever.

It's market research, they don't listen to their player base. They pay someone to do a quantitative or qualitative analysis which will result in a statistic and a report of what gamers want from their game.
And in the US gamers are generally equal to console players.

Also keep in mind when this kind of research is being done, theres nothing that decides if you're qualified to take part in it, and become part of the statistic, or not. You've just asked if you play rpg games for instance and then what you'd want from an rpg game.
Perhaps they ask if elements like inventory management appeal to you and you say yes or no.
No sane developer goes on a forum and ask what people want, as that kind of research is generally considered misleading - yes go figure.

You know what? Misleading or not, I'd rather have that than the way you describe Sad Since it's painfully obvious this kind of market research is foul and only serves to destroy the games we love.

I know, the company I'm part of decided not to do this at all, instead we defaulted to what the previous model was in the nineties, that is to say we make a game that we personally want to play and hope that theres others who think like we do.

You all don't seem to have a clue how game developing works and what the ultimate goal is. We are on the road to supreme epicness. Who'd want a steep learning curve, lots of text and a complex design in an epic game. Imagine a warrior slaying a horde of undead (with slowmo scenes and the camera being handled by some drunk), while fucking two (high polygon) girls in the process of slaying that horde, accompanied by some hardmetal soundtrack. Now that's EPIC!

WOW, just wow. What types of games are you working on?

A tactical, semi rpg, strategical cyberpunk game, though not ready to announce anything yet, as we're still in pre alpha. The game has been in development since december 2010.

If it's isometric (or bird's eye view / whatever the hell it's officially known as) and turn-based I want to preorder a copy already.

It's way too early to begin hyping it, the title isn't even final. But yes it's isometric with 3d sprites, we're making a game like they were made in the nineties, but with the knowledge that has since then been gained and allowed for refinement in programming and api's.

Yes I really don't want to tell. It's a start up indie company, currently we're looking at finding a publisher who can share our vision, I hope it'll be something like paradox.

You can probably figure out why it's not smart to tell of our name, on a piracy board of all things, when we're negotiating with publishers.

Great news. We need more tactical,RPG SF games. Keep us informed. I want to hear more, when possible of course.
