Ok so i'm thinking aobut upgrading my speakers to the Logitech Z-5500 + a sound card and i would like to know how does the modern sound cards compare with the Audigy 2 ZS that i currently own

The ZS may be older technology but it's still a decent card. How does it compared with the current cards like the Xonar and the Xi-Fi ? Is there really a noticeable difference or is it only minimal ? Is it worth it to upgrade from the ZS to either the Xonar or the Xi-Fi ? I don't really want to spend more than 150-175$ on a sound card so is it even worth it to upgrade from a ZS in that price range or should i just forget the idea ?

I haven't followed the audio scene for a long time since i got the ZS not too long after launch and didn't bother after that. However now i think i'm due for an upgrade , especially when it comes to my good old and trusty Logitech X-530 speakers Laughing.

Smile

Depends if you play older games. Nowadays it really doesn't matter what the card is, you'll get the optimal experience, especially on non-professional speakers (like the Z5500). The ZS is great when it comes to quality from outputs, so you'll enjoy the Z5500 with it. If you play old games, EAX5 will be missing from the card, but support for it is really low anyway.

I got the Azunetech Prelude with Logitech Z-5500 Speakers and its great.

I have my TV running through the card which encodes it to dolby digital and the sound is amazing! Games, Music + Movies are also very good Smile

I have the X-fi Titanium PCIE card with those speakers and everything is great. Upgraded from the audigy2zs as well. I know there are build-quality type things that are better with azunetech and asus, but unless you are an audiophile it's not worth the higher price, imo. It is kinda funny, I swore I'd never get another creative labs product because of probs with that soundcard and its support but to tell the truth I've been pretty happy with the x-fi.

I guess some questions in your situation are: Are you running vista/windows 7 or planning to? If so the support is seriously lacking with the audigys, whereas I've been very content with the drivers and apps for my x-fi in vista. To go along with that: are you looking for the very best sound in games? If so, the x-fi includes alchemy which maps all the legacy EAX soundmapping to the newer openAL standard. So that's a plus in that case.

There is also better support for using optical-out with the x-fi(and the others I guess) but as I just use the direct connections, I can't really say much on that point.

All in all, its just what you want and whatever you will be happy with in your setup.

Main reason I went with the Prelude was for the Coax output (Xbox360 was taking up the optical slot on the Z 5500's)

Also does the the Audigy 2 support Dolby Digital / DTS Live?

Im actually considering upgrading my Audigy2 with a "SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 PCI" for about 55 dollars.. Is it worth doing? Or should I just stick with my a2? I do play alot of games, and enjoy the sound but currently only have a creative 5.1 speaker system hooked up and dont anticipate upgrading to 7.1 for atleast 6 months or more.

I think the ZS does, yes.
