|
 |
When I click restart while in windows XP, shutsdown, bios clears, but then stops. Just black screen, no XP logo. I have to hold down power button. Shut off completely, then turn back on and xp boots ok.
I already did:
Updated bios (Abit IP-35E mob)
Reinstalled windows
Changed hard drives
Swapped out all extra cards connected
Cant think of anything else...
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Had a similar problem recently where the computer would post and get to bios but then it was hit and miss. Mostly it would get hung up but sometimes it would manage to get to windows. Thought it was the video card dying on me but on a hunch swapped out the psu to eliminate that suspect. Turned out to be the power supply that was defective.

I must have formatted and re-installed windows xp about 10x already. I run NOD32 and no viruses..
I think the power supply could be at fault. I will take my other power supply (Ultra X-Connect 500w ULT31560) and test it with this rig with issues. Maybe thats it..

Wouldnt your comp not start at all if it was the PSU? I dunno bout these things thats why i read these threads so I can ask questions and learn.
And sometimes, rarely, I know the solution...but not often lol

Nah, if one of the rails of the PSU is weak, it would still run but wouldn't have enough power to perform certain tasks. It'd be like having a shitty psu for a high end video card. It'd work, but itd crash often.

Replaced PSU and Hard Drive. It still does same thing. PSU I am using now is not new. So could be both are going bad. I dont know. Both are less than a year old and barely used. It does restart sometimes, always starts from a cold boot. Perhaps something to do with the electricity from home as we did have some circuits blow. I dont have a battert backup on this rig. Well, thanks for all your help..

Just ordered a brand new power supply (no more swapping out old ones)
Let me know if you think this will work:
OCZ500SXS 500W
My rig:
E6650 DuoCore, 8800GT, 3 SATA HD's, 1 IDE HD, 1 IDE DVD.
I dont think thats too demanding.

Actually, my rig does also lock up on cold boots too. Not often, but does. It also booted up and did not find one of my hard drives. Normally thats a sign the PSU is failing.
I learned alot about psu's since my issue. First, I realized the PSU I have been using was rated one of the worst brands -Ultra. Then, I found out using Modular PSU (those that you can detach cables) are bad too - causes more resistant. Well, my Ultra X-connect is modular.
I found this site that calculates what your rig will use in watts my was 318W.

So, on Tuesday, Ill get the OCZ PSU..Ill update here on my findings..

It was Powersupply! My new OCZ just came in, popped it in, and works great! No more stalling out on Bios. My ULTRA power supply is in the garbage. Never had a real power supply before until this one. Wont take them for granted anymore.
I also replaced WD 640GB HD too. So I had two issues. Both HD and PS are now working great! Such a great feeling when you get your rig back up and running..
Thanks for all your help!
