|
 |
after having my high speed cable connection shut off for a couple months due to having no money I got it hooked up again today but had to settle for the 'lite' speed.
the cable guy moved one or two of the cables on this 8 way splitter outside my house and plugged in the modem and I have internet now but I didnt see exactly which cables he moved around and was wondering if anyone knows a way I can switch them around to get faster speeds when I want to download something.
the splitter outside my house is a pct-ma2-8p multimedia drop amplifier.
i dont know if i can move one cable from one spot to another and get faster speeds or is it controlled through the modem they gave me or the main office?

I REALLY don't think that it is THAT "easy" to circumvent the speed limit

theres one tool out there that lets you catch docsis (the specification isp sends to your modem) via tftp (the only protocol it gets sended), but afaik docsis is encrypted with some easy algorithm. anyway you can change docsis specs to open "disabled" settings on your rented modem for example. then it sends this spec to modem and back to headend at isp to confirm it. but theres a high risk of getting caught, as they have implemented very smart detection mechanisms over there
but this speedup thing impossible nowadays
yes

it has more to do that cable companies repeatedly try to fuck us in the ass here like selling crippled high speed lite for similar prices of 20mbps+ line in the EU. Actually it's a lot like the traffic shaping and download limits in the UK
luckily I have an ISP that doesn't have a fucking clue or try to enforce anything, so at least internet is slightly cheaper and there is no "fair use" download limits |
Whos that ? Rogers?

yeah, but aren't they supposed to be a "premium" internet provider? | lol you're kidding? |
ok, I meant they're "supposed" to be
My ISP is "supposed" to be budget, and man they do a pretty good job in living up to that reputation. You should see what it's like calling tech support ... not only do they have like 1 guy in the whole country, but he's an idiot. And I've had a fair number of ISPs in my day, so I have something to compare to. Basically as long as you never need to talk to someone in tech support or billing or customer service or basically anyone you're OK | Have you ever had tech support in India look up abortion clinics near you? No? Ok, your customer service can't be as bad as comcast.
True story, I forgot what I was asking the woman, but she just kept giving me addresses of abortion clinics near me Had to redial to get someone else. But seriously, you can't top that, I mean, abortion clinics. EPIC!

my isp 'Road Runner' (only cable option I have in my area besides DSL or satellite) offers 3 speed options and the lite refers to the speed package I have.
the fastest is turbo which is (i think) 10 megabits for $55-60 US dollars
second is high speed which is $45 and is 7 megabits
the cheapest and slowest is usually $30 and its only 768... megabytes i think, its just under 1 megabit and I download only 95 kilobytes a second.
but I got a deal on the lite (option 3) for 20 dollars a month for 6 months and by then I'll be back on my feet and paying for the turbo again.
the upload speeds for high speed and lite are the same (around 40-45kb/sec) and the turbo is like 100kb/sec... not great up speeds but perfect for leechers
and road runner offers usenet with the service, it used to be uncapped and I would get my modem speed but within the past year they handed the service over for someone else to handle and they are capped at 500kb/sec with 100 day retention and no size limits.
its nice they have a few offers and i dont have many complaints about my isp, my connections have always been solid and I would recommend road runner cable internet to anyone.

cybersurf internet access, they use rogers cable ... even their service people. But man, talk about a company that doesn't have their shit together
and lol, Rogers is the worst of ISPs when it comes to ripping people off, bunch of fucking cunts. I hope that fuck Ted Rogers fucking rots in his grave. |
Edited cuz I provided info ppl dont need to know.
Suffice to say i have no cap, I get 2mb/sec off the www (like if im downloading a patch for a game or something) and 6mb/sec off usenet.
And I dont have a cap.

That's a good one! |
T1+ lines in Canada are super expensive. I was gunna get a T1 but its like 199 a month. A T2 is like 499/month and a T3, last time i checked (could be cheaper now) was 999/month.
No way Im paying 199/month for net access let alone a grand a month for a T3.
We arent Sweden ya know where like 3 backbones are located

Hehe here in Slovenia you get internet TV + telephone with 2 hours of local calls free + 20/20 mbit optic internet with unlimited download for 30 €. It costs 38 € if you get all the extra porn and movie channels on TV. It's a good deal.

Yeah cuz Sweden has like 3 or 4 of the main Hubs/backbones of the internet. Canada has 2 and the US has 1.
Read a 10 page article on it in Readers Digest. Either the November or December issue I think.

Well I get about 2.1 MB/s while browsing and downloading stuff from HTTP sites and even more when using torrents. Upload is usualy stable at about 2.0 MB/s . The only bad thing is that when I operate at full download and upload limits my computer goes to a crawl when playing games even though it's a E6600 with Raid 0 .

So its basically the same as me.
I get 2mb of HTTP and 6MB off usenet and if I happen to use a torrent with someone who has an equal or better connection, I get the same as usenet.
Tho I think ive used torrents 3 times....I dislike them alot.

Jeez that's slow, I would say extreme is 24 mbit over here with unlimited downloads, upload could be better though.

nono, I dont mean the line is 2mb or 6mb
I mean I litterally get 2mb when I download something off HTTP and 6MB off usenet
Thats fast enough for me.

Yes that's the difference between mbit and mgbyt, 24 mbit is around or 'literally' 3 megabytes.

Mbit = Mbyte * 8 (multiply by 8 ) I'm also used to writing in capitals when I'm talking about mbyte like MB and Mb when I'm talkin in bits.
