Ok, so it's time to shell out some cash because my old 8600 GTS is a bit underpowered nowadays. I have money for a 4850 and i'm left with three choices: HIS 4850 IceQ4 1024 MB, Sapphire HD4850 1024 MB or the Palit Daytona Radeon 4850 1024 MB Sonic Edition.

Here's the deal though: the HIS card is really hard to find in stock (in my city, at least), the Sapphire is a single slot card and i've read that it has problems with overheating after a couple of months and the Palit, even though it looks good on paper, I can't quite figure if it's worth it (because i've never owned a Palit card before, i just read a couple of reviews).

I could make a compromise and grab the HIS 512MB Turbo version but seeing as newer games are more demanding when it comes to video ram i'm left a bit puzzled as to what should i buy.

So, what do you think?

Dunno if the Palit is single or double slot, but I would definitely go with the HIS IceQ card. The double slot cooler will definitely provide better cooling and is probably more silent at work than a single slot one.

yeah, the HIS is top priority anyway, but as i said the 1024 MB version is very hard to find. Should i buy the 512MB Turbo Version? Is there a big difference in performance between them?

There is not - at least not yet. Nobody knows if it mkes a difference in the NEAR future, but most likely the card wont have enough power for games to come that need more then 512 MB anyway.
So - If you have to pay much more for a 1024 version, stick to 512.

1 Gig Video memory is only needed when you use VERY high resolutions, maybe even with aa+af. but in this case the 4850 wont be enough even with more ram.

So - no. For 4850 512MB is enough!

Paying a premium for the extra memory makes no sense to me personally when that little extra cash could go toward a 4870. Depending on your resolution, the 1 gig version won't benefit you. Stick with the regular 4850,
