So i got myself another 500gb SATA drive this week, and decided to take out one of my IDE drives, add the SATA drive, then put the IDE in a USB HDD enclosure.

So I did, and now the drive doesn't show up in Vista..

But the weird thing is that i can use the Safely Remove Hardware-feature, and there it is. But it's not showing in Explorer or even Disk Management. Cause i've been googling some, and most of the times it doesn't show up in explorer, but it does in Disk Management. Then you just add a drive letter and it works. But this drive does have a letter. And i've made sure no other drive has the same letter as the USB disk had when it was working..

Any help guys? Smile

Just throwing some ideas out to get the obvious out of the way:
Can you verify that the enclosure works and isn't the problem here?
Since it's Vista I have to ask about drivers.
Is the enclosure/hdd visible in bios or device manager?
See if the master/slave setting is causing the hiccup. Try putting it to auto or cable select.

Well it's not drivers - i got XP on my laptop and it doesn't show up there either. But it installs fine.. Same shit there, i can remove it, it shows up in device manager as USB Mass Storage device, and under disk drives as USB hdd.
Tried removing all other drives in my PC except system drive - nothing.

But here's the deal - if i have the USB drive plugged in, and turned on, the PC wont get past the POST screen. As soon as i turn the power switch on the enclosure off, it boots fine..

Tried both master and slave. Not sure if tried cable select though..

Is the enclosure broken? Confused

Not necessarily. Because the fact that the pc doesn't post with the device connected and on just means the bios doesn't have the driver to recognise it. Normally that shouldn't be a problem because that was the whole point of plug n play so it should be recognised once windows is up and running. But it is a pretty shitty product. The fact that even xp doesn't recognise the drive means bad support with drivers.

Some last options unless someone else has something better:
Try putting an (if you have one) old cd/dvd drive into the enclosure and see what it does. I still have an old enclosure I used to use in combination with a cd burner with a win98 laptop but the thing would freeze with a hard drive in it.
See if anyone else has the same problem but you've probably already googled it.
Last resort : Try some generic drivers! Be very careful though because it could end up being more trouble than it's worth to get the damn thing working.

I would probably end up making a ghetto mod with the ide drive outside/on top of the case (longer cables) assuming you don't have any more drive slots. Wink

But it's so weird, when its plugged in and i look under Disk Drives in Device Manager, the disk name is correct STXXXX-something (it's a Seagate drive). So it knows exactly what drive is in the enclosre :S

Bios drivers?

USB mass storage devices already use generic drivers in XP en Vista. Installing different ones will only cause more problems.

It sounds like a hardware error, make sure you didn't bend any pins when you put in the harddrive. Make sure the USB cable you use works. The harddrive jumpers should be set to master.

Bios drivers?

Some bioses are able to boot from usb sticks and even raids so I would assume that they come with drivers.

maybe this one is redundant, but have you tried activating/(re)initializing the partition(s) on the drive? cause it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue if vista recognizes the drive itself

Does this enclosure has its own power supply or it draws its power from USB port? If it draws power from USB maybe it needs to be plugged into two USB ports.

Also, do you plug it directly into the USB ports or you plug it into USB extension cord? If you use USB extension cord, try without USB extension cord.

To rule out faulty enclosure, try it with another HDD/CD (as swingman said).

And, as Rinze said, try replacing the USB cable.

Some quick replies

- No pins are bent on the HDD

- The USB cable is the only one i got, it has one of those rectangular connectors on the back

- It uses its own power supply

- When i used to plug it in my front USB ports, it wouldnt even install correctly. I now use the rear ports.

Well gonna try another drive later today then..
And thanks guys for all the help so far!

This sounds like the device doesn't get enough power from USB port. I suspect that the cable is responsible for that.
