I know that with chipped Wii's the chip is soldered somewhere on the dvd drive board. So if the laser go's out and you have to replace it, does the wii being modded make it more difficult?

No it's doesn't make a differnce if it's chipped or not (The chip normally is on the underside of the drive so it's not blocking any acces to the laser). Just replace the laser and you're al set again.
