Pilot whales writhing and thrashing about madly in shallow waters, the ruby-red sea drenched with their blood and no means or hope for the creatures to escape from their captors — it’s the blood-bath scene of a massacre for an age-old tradition of the coming of age, the mark of transition from childhood to adulthood, in the archipelago of the Faroe Islands.
i've cut off a wrist from a guy who tortured some puppy, it was pleasure to hear this young fella screaming like hell. i remember how his dad asked for all the town people to find "me" without knowing what he did
Although it seems barbaric, these people are only fishing.
They do it for food, and the scenes in these photos are nothing compared to those of a regulated and approved abbatoir or battery chicken farm, which we in the west rely on (even those who eat only hand-reared, organic meat).

Chicken are not killed so violently in front of crowds of kids.
traditions begin somewhere. And just because people get set in their ways doesnt make a stupid behaviour better. It s the tradition of fascists to kill jews. It s the tradition of cannibals to eat fellow humans. It s the tradition of idiots to do stupid things.
I m not judgemental when it comes to ideas people have, or how they live their lives really. But when it starts to affect other people or the environment i live in in a bad way, everybody should start judging... ...or lets just say it s my tradition to question stupid behaviour, who are you to judge?
so... if you lived there, lived by the tradition, you'd compare it to Nazism or cannibalism as well? People need to eat, people need to survive, people gotta do what they gotta do. It's all flowers and cupcakes until the sea turns red.
If they were there screwing the fish, inseminating them so they can give birth to super humanfish, lead by the infamous aquaman, then yes, i'd judge. I'd be pissed because appearantly I never got the memo which means my sperm is inferior to them. white means they're racist assholes. And that just pisses me off. But you kno what... they just said 2 million people in china will die from smoking this year. Seems like a lot. A real lot. .1%
Let people do what they do. If you don't fancy it, ignore it. They've been doing that. They'll keep doing that. Next we're all gonna complain about sushi and other foods. Wait... you're vegan lutzi... i rest my case.
it's a tradition based on the need to eat the whales to survive. they no longer need to eat the whales, so they no longer need the tradition.
Sure they do. It's something they've been doing for eons. Why ruin it? Traditions don't evolve, they are bought, manipulated, marketed, and then thrown away to die.
Animal-rights activists argue that the grindadráp is not only cruel, but in view of the ample food supply in today's Faroes, completely unnecessary. Additional argumentation is supplied by the Faroese Ministry of Health, which warns of excessive consumption of pilot whale meat, since it has been shown to contain high levels of mercury, PCBs and environmental poisons.[15] In practice this means that pilot whale meat and blubber can only be safely consumed once a month by the Faroese, a much smaller quantity compared with previous decades.
waldo, i stopped following many "traditions" of my own culture because i questioned them. Traditions arent the sacriligous thing that cultures make them out to be. Especially when it comes to killing.
Honestly, I won't listen to animal rights activists. They're swine.
Yeah it's not healthy to eat SOOO MUCH of them, but they can save it, eat for later. Feed a whole town and what not.
i'm sure they'll enjoy eating whale for a month, every day after chilling on the red beach, next to rotting carcasses, but that doesn't make all this much better, does it?
Well, I'm pretty sure the red beach would be clean by day 4, and the carcasses will be gone. So yes, they'll enjoy the whale meat. Seriously. It's not that bad. If they were killing babies and going clubbing. Yeah. But come on. COME ON!
Spoiler:
You can't really take away what they've been doing for ages.
People hunt. Cows are mcdonaldsized. Chickens are kfced. This is normal. It looks awful and sad and awwwww. But it's what we do. It's what they do. Judging them because of their traditions and way of life is wrong. Plain wrong. Because you don't agree with it. Because people don't agree with it. I swear the shit peta and other animal activists put forth in this world, really fucked everything up for everyone.
I know what you're saying lutz... and i'm pretty sure a lot of people there question them now. But a lot of people live strongly with it and by it. You can't hate them for that. Sense of pride and shit and all that. It's just like religion and other malarkey. Let them be.

But surely you still dress up like this for every holiday and festive event like a decent german?
You can't really take away what they've been doing for ages.
a lot of shit needs to be taken away already. it prolly won't, but that doesn't make it more acceptable.
and about the festive german costume, i bet it works wonders on chicks at oktoberfest.
yeah, i can easily picture myself surrounded by blonde girls named helga that are keeping my 1 liter glass filled and laughing at my drunken incoherent attempts at cracking jokes.

The world needs change, I agree. But in reality if you could change the world in a second, would you? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't. Religion keeps people on their toes. Always fascinating seeing how far people can go. Stuff like this, as nasty and iffy and icky it is, keeps people tuned in to the world around them and educates us. People are fascinating. If everything was picture perfect, we'd all be bored and annoyed with everyone. It's true.
I don't agree with religions and traditions and all that bullshit, but it's there for a reason. To guide people. Even if it's obscure and disgusting to some, it's a way of life for others. You can't judge that. I mean people will judge you based on music, choice of movies and books and clothes. It's not such a happy thing.
Religions are a thing of the past, giving explanations to alot of stuff that couldn't be explained. Imho they should just get away with it all, religion breeds stupidity and hate, i would love to see a world free of the ties that people call faith, religion, higher power or whatever.
And shit like these whale killings should really just stop. massacring so many whales(or any other animal) because of a stupid tradition/ritual, thats just stupid, cruel and should be met with extreme disgust.
and trying to justify it with saying they've done it for hundreds of years is again so stupid, so in your world honor killings are ok? because they've been doin that shit forever?

rofl I just love that fucking 'tradition' excuse it's so funny. There is a good old tradition in Africa, you cut a girls vagina and leave it on some rock to dry out in the sun, what a nice tradition let's all follow and make it into a nice family picnic, if you don't have a daughter borrow your neighbors. What about 'stone the raped bitch to death' tradition loads of fun, goes well with traditional music.
One could come to a conclusion that people with 'tradition' are no different than Nazis, fucking wankers traped in fucking history, plus it's the only thing keeping religion alive because fucking old people teach their grandchildren "go to church it's tradition". I fucking hate tradition.
that ain't no tradition, max, that's umm torture and a hate crime and a whole lot of fun for cnn. I'm sure you'd say aids is a tradition there as well.
Stoning I don't agree with. It is not civil and it is wrong, but you know what, fuck it. You can't infringe on every nationality, every religion, every tradition that doesn't suit you. A woman was violated. She's fawked. In that society men are kings and women are meh slaves. It's easy to go say it's wrong from the other end of the globe. People there live by it, they live with it, and yeah a whole lot don't agree with it, but they can't change it. Complaining about it, isn't gonna do anything. It'll make people aware of the situation, and then they'll complain, and more will complain. If it really is an issue that you believe you can change, then go change it. Complaining proves only that you know it's a problem.
There's fuck all wrong with the world. Everyone lives where they live. They abide by their own laws. Their own rules. They have their own traditions. Own little problems. Own little religious cliques. Stop worrying about a problem a million miles away from you that you can't solve and focus on the one at home that you could potentially solve..

from what i heard i heard it was all them rebels and shit people who pillage lil villages and circumcise women and chop breasts off and all that shit. Hmm. That's some real nasty shit now.
