|
 |
Hey,
Sorry if this has been asked 100 times already.
1. I was wondering what everyone was using for a mod chip on the XBOX 360?
2. Which is the best?
3. Are there soderless USB chips now?
4. Also, I read that using a mod chip with XBOX Live can get you banned. Do you have another XBOX 360 for playing downloaded games?
I just saw someone ask in the Gears of War 2 thread if anyone wants to play coop and I was like how does he do that without being banned by M$.
TIA!

No chip - they are crap. You flash your DVD-drive with a hacked firmware which is even Live proof.

I just played GOW2 and went on live.. i'm now awaiting my Live ban when the next dashboard update comes around.
Seriously though no one knows for sure how/what MS check before they dish out the bans.
Still flashed firmware is the way to go with a 360 though.

Hehe I asked this question couple days ago, flashed my 360 within 25-30 mins, it went smooth and learned a couple of new things. If you have any questions, i stopped off at a couple of forums and got a lot of good info.

The tool is extremely cheap to buy on Ebay.
It turns a slow sloppy job into a quick and easy job and with no outside damage.
I couldn't be without mine.
I also hope you have a Torx 10 security bit driver too. With the tool you get one included.

Just flashed the 360 of a friend of mine yesterday, was quick an easy, even getting the white lid of with a small screwdriver went fast and easy without damaging it. But it was kinda wierd, I remembered having more problems when I did mine. Well, another case of beer earned and another fellow buccaneer on the net

Yes, that is what I have read so far on all the forums. I guess the real threat is the November update. I am unplugging my X360 when I am playing a backup and plugging in when I am playing a Xbox Live game like Rock Band 2.

Maybe I can help clear up some confusion regarding the DVD drive firmware hacks... and hopefully make some of you feel better.
Microsoft has shot themselves in the foot over this, because:
1. Multiple sources of drives
and
2. A hamfisted attempt to block hackers prevents them from reading many models they use on Xbox 360s, but did nothing to stop the hackers who know how to access the firmware.
Essentially, Microsoft directed DVD drive suppliers to prevent read access to the firmware through 'normal' means - but since nobody likes wasting perfectly good units because of a glitch on the assembly line, these drives still retain a means to reflash (read and write) the firmware; in this case, it involves powering the drive off and on and using a SATA chipset that can handle the re-initialization of the drive in the 'tricky' manner required to access the drive's firmware in recovery mode. The Xbox 360 is incapable of doing this without physical intervention, since the drive power supply is not independent from the mainboard's supply.
Short explanation: There is no DIRECT means for Microsoft to verify that the firmware has been hacked on drives with Firmguard protection (almost all later drives). Even if they can (some models do allow this), it becomes tricky to navigate how the system has been configured, updated, refurbished, repaired.... making it an iffy proposition to catch a user that way.
Microsoft can, and has tried in the past, to use INDIRECT means to detect modders... but the best method they came up with resulted in tons of false positives because of failing drives on legit, non-modded systems. Timing checks failed. Because of this, you are relatively safe as long as you follow the following general rules:
1. Use only backups you've made for yourself ...or barring that...
2. Use only 'clean' retail releases from your own region, from groups with a good reputation
3. Don't play games that aren't released yet on
Review copies can trip you up. Likewise, don't put it past Microsoft or EA to release a 'trojan' version fo the game as a honey pot to catch modders who download releases - i.e. a game that specificaly signals Microsoft that it's a pirated downloaded game. We haven't seen the last move YET, but I can't see why it hasn't happend yet. Anything with modded data coud also trip you up - Guitar Hero II, for example, could get an update that looks at the data on the disc and reports the user to the Microsoft servers, for example.
For the most part, DVD firmware hacking by itself is perfectly safe, just be aware of the copied software you are running.
