so, yeah, it's me again! Smile

so i decided to buy myself a headset, and i got this one:
Creative Labs FATAL1TY Pro Series Gaming Headset
so for, so good. i can hear sound through it, no problem - but recording - well that's the point - not working, not at all.
my sound card is a creative labs x-fi xtreme audio (not the pci express version) so i thought that wouldn't be a problem...

when i switch the mic on (with the remote control switch thingie that's on the cable) while listening to music in winamp i get sounds like this:

strange noise
and when i go ahead and crank the mic volume up in the windows volume control i get something like this:
2nd strange noise

yeah - what i can't figure out since i don't have another headset here (and haven't used one with this pc up to now) if it's a problem with the headset or if my sound card is messed up.
any one had something like this ever happen? or have any idea how to check what's wrong?
thanks for some help Smile
btw. those two files are up on rs hope that's not a problem

p.s.: tried recording something in audacity and tried the windows sound hardware test under "sounds and audio devices" - and the headset is properly plugged in, mic in the mic in and the headphones in line out - so unless the mic port is messed up or the plug that shouldn't be the problem

Mandatory noob check (no offense Very Happy) before anything else:

Check the mic isn't muted and that you have the correct recording device selected.

Now that that's out of the way, it does look like it's a somewhat common problem with that particular combo (http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=112899) - can you try the mic on another computer / with the onboard soundcard?

noob check completed (no offense taken ^^)
so i had to reinstall my onboard sound plugged the mic into it and et voilá! it works as it should - not entirely, now my problem is how the heck (if at all) do i get recording software to record audio+video AND my mic at the same time? since they run on 2 seperate sound cards i suppose that won't work, right?

btw. that your background? mighty cool pic ^^

edit: i just noticed a slight almost un-noticeable scratching sound on the left side of my headset - might be a hardware prob after all, or my sound card really craps out. damn - gonna try the headphones on my ipod - nope, no scratching with my ipod, neither music or vids - so headsets technically fine

That might very well be the case, but I've never had to do a setup like that so I'm no expert. If I were you I'd try and look into getting that x-fi mic port working with the headset, from what little I googled it seemed like a real common problem - someone has to have worked a solution by now. Smile

And nope not my pic, but I actually used to have that background in my collection and I've been trying to find it all night, but nothing so far. Goddamnit! Very Happy

haven't solved my problem so far, just plugged in my mic + headphone into my onboard soudn card. but what i found out is that i've been kinda screwed. the x-fi xtreme audio is basically a re-branded audigy SE and therefore inferior to the rest of the x-fi series because it technically does NOT belong to the series. damn that....
should have know that something was off, that thing was too cheap compared to the rest.
well, money paid, lesson learned.
and like i said on my sound blaster line out i have a scratching on the left ear, so i might well end up buying a new sound card (but first i'll stilly try to solve that problem ^^)
