Google to buy Valve?

Interesting combination, somehow didn't see it coming.

It's a rumour from an (allegedly) unreliable site. I don't buy it. I do think, based on what Doug Lombardi has said in the past, that they won't remain independent forever though - so who knows what might happen? I can't see google actually being interested in their games development mind you.

Maybe not the games development but Valve do own the biggest on-line distribution service going though which coupled with there ad company and various other things they got going could make them all powerful.

If I was going to buy Valve, Steam is what I would be focusing on.

We asked Valve to comment on the rumour, and received a succinct reply:

“Which is all it is… a rumor.”

actually i wouldn't even be surprised if google fuses with EA and they build a geaglebox console. just wondering why google steps into gaming business in the first place, even if it's just for steam - which of course is an excellent service, but why don't they just build their own like always?

I could see it now...

Little Billy starts his PC..
Loads Firefox and types www.google.com..
Types "cracks for Half-Life 2" in the search box..
Search results crash Little Billy's PC and fry his memory and CPU.

Very Happy

I would rather valve stay valve... Wink

It's never good to have one company that has so much power... I honestly have enough of google shit wherever I go.

Not really, but what's the difference if some companies become so big and powerful that they effectively have monopolies anyway?

The state should ensure there's competition, perhaps by severly penalising huge companies and subsidizing the smaller ones to a larger degree. Or at least put more effort into preventing the already huge companies from going around buying up all the smaller ones, because the current situation is getting ridiculous.

and with modern capitalism running awry as it is, it's the companies that are running the state
(bush administration is essentially a puppet for corporate military contracts)
and the end result is the same - just based on a different model
in europe much of art, including games and movies, is directly supported by government grants
mostly directed toward art of actual artistic merit, rather than your generic every-day commercial whoring, like 90% of mainstream commercial games, music and movies
the state having oversight of art over bullshit is not that bad of an idea - though knowing how corporate-corrupt the US is, i wouldn't put much faith in it either

Valve: Google buyout is a "rumour"
Wednesday 17-Sep-2008 12:29 PM Steam studio gives official comment

"Well placed sources" have indicated that mega corporation Google is about to acquire Valve, according to a report on The Inquirer.

According to the report the deal is going down "any second now" and will put Steam, by far the best digital distribution service in gaming, into the search engine company's hands.

We haven't done any research, but tech manager John Houlihan reliably tells us Google is "f***ing massive", which would no doubt help even further in strengthening the download service's number one position.

Valve's already gone on the record and welcomed acquisition, stating in an interview that it's "happy to have that conversation."

We've left a message with Valve who usually gets back to us pretty sharpish. So if it's not given us a statement by 4pm, it's true.

UPDATE: The company has indeed got back to us and the official word is "rumour". No, really; "'Rumour' is the word", is the company statement we recieved via e-mail. And it missed the 4pm deadline as well...
