What is the best alternative to Messenger?

I want these features!

- Handles Messenger smileys, e.g if someone has installed a custom one in Messenger i want to be able to see it, just like i would if i used Messenger

- Now playing/personal message would be nice to have

- Good looking interface

And ofcourse Vista compatible, but i guess all of them are..

I've used Miranda before, and it's indeed like the Foobar of IM's. Been using Foobar for 4 years now.

What plugins do i need for it to do the things i want?

sorry mate, i'm quite minimalist dude - dont use smileys, personal messages and things like that. get started from here:
http://addons.miranda-im.org/

and about foobar: yep, my first and only choice of players, too Wink

edit: about personal messages (enable msn v7 protocol in msn settings at miranda before:
http://forums.miranda-im.org/showpost.php?p=91998&postcount=5

about custom smileys:

dnno, haven't noticed that option before.. (i aint at my box right now)

but yeah, go through forum search, there's shitaload ppl asking the same thing over and over again

I've actually been using Miranda for a few weeks now, found a super clean skin for it, its just basically a semi-transparent window with my contacts, fits very well with my clear glass aero theme. But Digsby looks interesting! Will post a screen of my current desktop when i get off work, hopefully i can customize digsby to look similar Smile

People... shocking no one mentioned this:

www.meebo.com

Take your MSN and other Inet chat services with you ANYWHERE you go via a browser. Its bloody light-weight since it just uses the browser and is now a modular addon for Firefox. Don't install bloatware chat programs when it can be part of the browser if you desire.

Best part of meebo is: it works behind corporate firewall where all other chap apps do not (unless your firewall is accessible and chances are its not open).

Meebo is slowly improving as well. Biggest complain is you cannot receive files from other MSN people unless they use meebo as well but you can send to them. Thats on their ToDo list.

Other than meebo.com, what chat client out there is AS PORTABLE and works through any firewall without issue compared to Meebo? Anyone?

Well, if you aren't interested in other protocols there are simple but nice flash webclients for msn and yahoo, which offer interoperability for these 2 protocols.

I was going to say that too. It is what I use. I know a few PC users who use it as well. They like it. It does everything you want _SiN_ Has some cool plug-ins.
