During an interview with The Financial Times--a business publication--Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's CEO confirmed that while they don't have anything official to say yet, they are working towards a new console release. "At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have a next-generation hardware" were his words. Of course, with four iterations of PlayStation systems so far, it's no doubt that Sony would eventually continue its success with gaming consoles. Such a claim shouldn't be a surprise, but it does beg the question as to when the next generation of hardware will actually begin to roll out, marking an end to the current PlayStation 4, which has been selling incredibly well, and if Sony will continue their hot streak.

Yoshida's comment also possibly ties into a document that Sony has filed. Within it is a patent for "remastering by emulation", which would allow for "legacy game software" to be remastered for a "higher resolution display". Though, while the publishing of the patent and its details is from October 2018, Sony actually filed the patent back in 2016, meaning its not certain that it relates to any future hardware, or will definitively be utilized.

The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.
What are your thoughts? Are you ready for a "PlayStation 5" to maybe get a reveal soon? Do you think Sony can hold onto the lead they gained over Microsoft this gen? And would a new PlayStation system even offer backwards compatibility, when the PlayStation 4 notably did not?

After the success Microsoft are having with Xbox One backward compatibility it will be very stupid not having it on PS5, at the very least for PS4 games.

If Microsoft can provide it with such hardware difference between 360 and Xbone, it will be lazy ass scumbag move if Sony doesn't do it (especially because PS5 will most likely be on x86-64 too, unless some miracle happens in the ARM world and Sony develops tools to optimize shitty code for any platform).

Most likely PS5 will be using a x86-64 CPU and I guess a Radeon card since it seems these days NVIDIA is only working with Nintendo.

I also think I read something about AMD being contracted to MS/Sony for years or something like that ?

So won't be that hard for them to emulate PS4.

Not sure about PS3 really, yes a PS5 will be powerful enough I guess, but it's still a heal of a console to emulate because of the CELL arch. I won't say victory.

The PowerPC from the X360 is complicated to emulate, even Apple didn't manage to emulate it with Rosetta so this is surprising they managed to have X360 games running on such a shitty XBONE.

I don't really get why another big company like Apple, Lenovo, Toshiba, Dell, Panasonic, Samsung etc don't just release a next gen console too. Now that they're basically just PC's with a modified Android OS - how hard would it ACTUALLY be? It'd be interesting to see a real race with say 4 or 5 "next gen" top end consoles.

Maybe it's close? We're already seeing significant new players into the old iPhone vs Samsung phone game.

Developing games has become VERY expensive for the big AAA titles. One more platform, with a totally different base only pays of if enough people show interest. Why should those other companies join the market if they don't see a possible chance to get the interest of developers? Samsung and Apple already make a ton of mobile gamers and their appstores. Panasonic burned their mouths more than enough I guess Razz And what could lenovo, toshiba or dell bring into the mixture? They have 0 experience.
