the PC i am talking about has 2 HDDs S-ATA each of 160GB. one of them (the old one) has some bad sectors that have been previously compiled in 1 drive unit in order to make them unuseable for storing datas. last week i tried fixing the PC and it was all fine until i had to install the anti-virus. right after installing the av, the PC started to restart out of control everytime it loaded the Welcome screen (further intel on this matter can be find on Apps forum -> Antivirus & Hardware forum -> Restarting Computer). the PC managed to work with everything installed except the anti-virus (i tried installing KAV 7 & KIS Cool. sometime ago, whenever the bad sectors were need in order to read/write the information they contained, the PC restarted and i suppose that is why the PC always restarted after installing the AV.
my friend contacted me earlier and told me the PC is broken again and this time he wants to save some of the data on his harddrives and after he wants his PC to work again. though he did not ask me, i suppose he also wants an AV installed and so on.

I want to delete all the partitions but by doing so, i will have no other choice but to delete the partitions containing the bad sectors and allowing them to become a part of any other partitions i will create.
i wanna know if there is a program that i can use in order to detect the bad sectors and alocate them to only one partition, or, even better, to allow me to detect them and fix them (if possible) or to hide the partition in such a matter that any AV i will install in the future it will not read that drive thus allowing the PC to work at least on a medium level. could really use any links from were to download that/those programs Rolling Eyes

um
is there any reason you wouldn't just buy a new drive and be done with it?
they cost nothing these days
bad sectors are physical defects on the disk, so no amount of software fiddling will fix that
and every time the scan-head goes over that area of the disk, the bad sectors will spread like a cancer on your drive
even if you don't allocate that area
if it's warranty is still valid, RMA it for a new one

60euro for external 500GB...

so i guess buying a new one is idd much easier than wasting time on fixing it

well, ya guys i know it's a lot easier to buy a new HDD but since the PC is not mine all i can do is to help my friend in any way i can.
i really hope he doesn't have physical bads though from my experience i know that the errors he gets are most likely made by physical bads (and obviously you guys know that too). anyway, i will try to fix his hdds in any way i can.
just cross my mind.... does Partition Magic 8 have the ability to hide the drive containing the bad sectors? have "played" with it for quite a long time and i don;t remember.
