Since I found the kick-ass widescreen reso fix for all the Dark Engine games, I was thinking of replaying them all over again - Thief I & II and System Shock 2. Thief games first, so I'd like to hear recommendations for some great new maps etc. for Thief games.

Obviously reading up on the ttlg forums and other places for recommendations, but would like to hear from your experiences as well.

You might also have to limit the games to 1 cpu core only, to avoid crashing, and set your screen's refresh rate to 60hz and activate VSync, to prevent the games from running way too fast.

Ah crud, can't even get Thief Gold to install on an XP SP2 system. Tried all the tricks the TTLG folks have in their technical FAQ. Woe is me. Sad

A few years ago I tried to play Thief 1 and 2 and it lead to no success no matter what I did. Its sad that most likely those two games will be on a shelf forever... no matter how much I can't play them I sure the hell am not going to throw them or give them away.

Makes titles like Thief and Thief 2 (And possibly SystemShock) work better on more recent hardware. Smile
(Author also did a patch for the Fallout titles called SFall and numerous Morrowind and Oblivion utilities like OBMM and MGE albeit for the Fallout titles I'd also recommend the mods and patches on the NoMutantsAllowed site.)

Great replay choice!
The Thief Games (1-2) are some of my all time favorites.

But you can't replay these games without first installing the High Res texture packs!
They really breathe new life into the old Dark engine!

Here you can also download new models for some various items, as well as new sky and cloud textures.

Here are some other texture packs you might want to look into:

Last but not least; the Unofficial Thief II Expansion: T2X Shadow of the Metal Age

Have fun!

Yeah it's been long overdue, the first two Thief games are some of my absolute favorites - and talk about immersive and atmospheric games even today! Can't wait 'til I get to the undead missions - I remember the first time I played those, just ran through the whole mission, panicking all the time. So intense. Very Happy

And cheers for the links, only installed the Thief II replacement models & textures so far but definitely grabbing those as well.

There's already a few mods for that like "400" and a few of Vurt's retextures using the newer capabilities of that unofficial patch to have higher-res textures in better formats. Smile

Or as modded as the steam version is.

First time is always vanilla.

I agree, for all games but ss2, as the mods like SHTUP are completely unnoticeable and don't change anything in the game, simply increase resolution of original assets.

SHTUP is vanilla to me Smile

After redoing T3 once the thread was necroed, I'm redoing T2.

T2 is the superior game, and the mods did wonder with the graphics and such (within the limits of a 21yo engine & game).

Great experience so far: no bugs of any kind, not a single crash.

Mod used:

https://www.moddb.com/mods/t2fix/downloads

https://www.moddb.com/games/thief-ii-the-metal-age/downloads/tafferpatcher-v-2018

https://www.moddb.com/mods/thief-2-hd-texture-mod/downloads

That's the order of install too, and I used the GoG version.

ENJOY, YOU TAFFERS! Troll Dad

Working on a new texture mod for T2, just like with my Jedi Knight mod it's (obviously) AI enhanced. But i'll also include my tree meshes and some other models.

400 out of around 1600 textures are finished or close to finished (some need photoshop).

Great work man!

But... we (me & son) still prefer the old pixelated way in Thief games.

You know... nostalgia & shit.

Besides... *ahem* in some places, the geometry is very / extremely simple and just doesn't quite fit with high-res textures. Razz

Wouldn't say it's pixelated, it's just blurry. Pixelation does have a certain nostalgia for me, blurriness, not so much. But each to his own Smile

Personally I don't think geometry looks better because it's more blurry. If anything the simple geometry can be made to look more interesting and more 3D when using hires textures. I used it sometimes for my SS2 mod, like making doors actually appear to have depth and 3D to it by changing the texture from an entirely flat looking surface to a surface with some depth to it. And i've adapted it to this mod too for many textures.
