Well I don't know of anything free per say, but I usually use my 3g modem and the included software to send SMS. And the free ones I've been trying usually required a subscription and such.
In the states, we can send SMS via email to phones too. I text my wife from my gmail account, and when she replies back, the response is in my email as well. <phonenumber>@vtext.com for verizon for instance..
The services Syco and Cyberia are talking about are SMS APIs integrated in mail services and whatnot. Still requires a subscription service on Googles' and whoevers end tho.
There are no "free" SMS services, because one way or another, somebody pays for the SMS access to the SMSC on the telecom providers end.
