So i decided to try Xubuntu, it appearently is a distro with different frontend that gives more performance, first tests seems like its notably faster then standard Ubuntu.
2 Issues i have
- No sound, Ubuntu would have sound right after install, i have an audigy 2 zs, i already selected in sound settings the audigy to no avail.
- Install was hell, the font was so small and messed up i couldnt make out what i said, with alot of guesswork i got the install done, and after that it took me 20 mins to figure out where i could change the fonts, i can read everything now but its still way out of proportion with a crappy font.
But its really fast, even compared to my tweaked XP install, i want to try the 64bit release but last time i use a 64bit distro there was no flash plugin for 64bit firefox, but that might have changed now.

only real difference should be the xfce window damager, with sound having nothing to do with it
you could have had the same thing by just installing xfce desktop from your normal ubuntu setup
try update all the packages and install anything specially to do with audigy, if there is any
update alsa to a newer one from their site
i had some problems with my soundcard on the repository version of alsa (not a creative card though)

OK tried 64bit unbuntu, same font issue during install and during use of the OS, the fix was having it download and install the ATI drivers, not easy when you arent familiar with linux and have to guess where to go in settings.
Sounds works flawlessly in ubuntu too.
As a third note there seems to be flash support for 64 bit firefox now, works decently enough to use.
